Yesterday I was putting in some new blue LED’s into my instrument panel.

When doing this I decided to check out why my Auto Shifter light wasn’t working.

I took the stick off, saw that I couldn’t take it off and when I put it back together it was very hard to put my truck into park and vice versa; I can use a screwdriver to push the pin down to put it into park.

I’m wanting to fix this issue.

    Three things I noticed were:

    1. The shifter button on the stick isn’t as responsive. (Have to push down further that normal for movement)

    2. The pin that the shifter button affects doesn’t go low enough to put it into Park or Low gear.

3.The whole gear/stick system is very loose.

I believe #3 has to mainly do with my shift bushing.

#3 will likely solve these issues. I can see blue bits of crumbled bushing in the picture...

    I’m hoping I’m quoting right.

I took it apart further and I agree it definitely need new bushings.

I figured out how to take off the stick “handle” and There’s a button that’s on the inside of the stick; I tested it and it worked fine.

I’m thinking the plastic button on the “handle” that pushes on the inside button has worn or fallen out of place.

    Here are some photos.

There are a few videos and write ups floating around on how to take this apart and replace the bushings. I STRONGLY suggest watching those, and replacing the bushings before you continue to diagnose your shifter issues.

Well its to late to take your last bit of advice…

So I was pressing on the Cream orange button like I was in the last photo and thought maybe if flip it around it might work and it worked… . No more problems with changing gears.

I feel mildly stupid and a thousand times relieved.

I’ll definitely look into a few instal videos on bushings and find the best way to put them in.

    Thank you for your help.

Ok, well that orange thing didn't flip itself around originally, so you have travel issues elsewhere in your shifter. Fixing those should be your actual goal.

I replaced my shifter bushings and it made a huge improvement with shifter feel.

Pay careful attention to this area. That’s a zoomed in screen grab of your picture. Looks like it may be not indexed correctly. Make sure everything goes back together correctly, and test the range of motion before you button it all back up.

I had the same issue after replacing the shifter bushings. when I reinstalled the handle the orientation of the plunger(lack of a better term, where your thumb is located in the first image had rotated 180 degrees. Because the plunger is sloped it prevented the mechanism from coming all the way down. I'd try taking the handle of the plunger and rotating the plunger 180 degrees.

Additionally these guys are right on the money with the shifter bushings. mine were original and had literally disintegrated. Feels brand new now.
-Take your time, read the posts, and watch the videos... its really not hard
-i took the whole mechanism out, this made it much easier to get everything torn apart, cleaned and reassembled.
