Stopping in for the biweekly carnage report. Today it was our debarker head that some of you may remember I put together almost six months ago. Went from perfectly assembled and ready to use, to this mushroomed mass of aluminum in about 45 minutes. C8DA1CCF-0CAC-406E-8854-0E1AD6AEC68A.jpg9089C1C1-C7BE-4EB6-8278-2E94D76A3A3D.jpg

Besides that it just didn't want to be a working head? Nope. It did this exact thing last year (before I worked at this location.) And they assumed the operator ran it into a rock to cause this kind of carnage. Now that it's detonated again, I'm not so sure. All the tip attachment bolts are 5/8 -11 grade 8 torqued to 175 ft lbs. no idea how half of them backed out/loosened up and let the tips fall off/mushroom the aluminum.

Please update us on what you find out. I think company would want to know just what went awry before slapping a replacement cutter head in there. Maybe that aluminum is just too fatigued, once one piece goes its all she wrote?
I got a walk in the park job compared to the stuff you face regularly, but in a way I envy that challenge.

I'd love to find the smoking gun as well, but sadly I'm missing a lot of history on this piece of equipment. I don't believe this head is original to the machine, and it's been damaged severely and repaired before. Half the tip holders have helicoils in them, the other half have had weld spattered across them to build them back up. The aluminum of this head seems much older and stressed than the aluminum of the head you can see in the background of the first picture. We have zero literature on hand for this debarking machine, it's been hosgepodged together so many times, and gets beat so hard, there's nothing original to it anymore. So for all we know you may need to run a slower setting on the drop down arm when using this head with the aggressive winter tips. Or a slower rotation, which is currently around 1750 rpm, straight drive off a motor.

Edit: obviously we aren't putting this head back on, we're putting our aggressive winter tips on the "summer" debarker head and using that. Which we know works with the current rpm settings, so there's no real way for me to experiment and test with this one.
