    Hey folks,

Ordered my yakima outpost and hoping to do some hunting and bowfishing. Would love to fix a rifle or bow case to side bars. Nervous about doing so. Any suggestions, pics, or input?

    Thanks!

Why not just put your gun or bow on the back seat??

I don't even know how folks get away with having them on the roof racks for gear, around here the thugs break into trucks just to look for guns. I have some outdoor stickers on my truck (a Patagonia, Dagger kayak, Black Diamond, Paddle faster I hear banjo music, etc) but nothing gun, hunting or fishing related at all.

So, I have a squirrel dog that I road hunt. Essentially, I drive along gravel roads in state parks till she winds/sees/hears a squirrel and takes off into the woods and trees it. I often sit my daughters or guests in back seat. So, repeatedly pulling a loaded gun from backseat is a safety issue. My dog box is in back and the ties downs get in the way back there.

As far a bow, that wouldn't be a problem.

Saw some pics somewhere with what looked like rifle cases and just wanted to see what you folks were running.

Mine would not be for storage purposes as much as for easy and safe access and transporting from home to hunting spot.

You have a loaded gun in your truck while driving/hunting???!!!??? Isn't that illegal and unsafe to boot???

It'd be easy enough to mount some of the commercial brackets made for mounting Pelican cases on the case/rack or you could make your own using something like a couple of pieces of aluminum extruded Z bar stock and whatever style clamps you prefer. A lot of guys over at Adventure Rider have come up with various ways of mounting Pelican cases to their bikes.

The simplest solution would be to just drill a couple of holes and bolt the case on using bolts, fender washers and wing nuts.

Legally, gun must be in case or inside vehicle and not allowed to shoot from a vehicle.

Loaded...It is similar to duck hunting....if you loaded the gun when you saw the duck you would be too late. Squirrels chased/treed by dogs will dive for holes and timber-out to another tree.

So it sounds like Pelican is the go-to for case options. Are most setups mods? Curious if Pelican/Plano/Yakima offered a specific version

I like Pelicans even though they're overkill for most applications. I've also got a Plano I picked up on clearance and I'm not impressed with it. It'll suffice for going to and from the truck/range but overall it's too flimsy/flexible for my taste and the foam isn't as stiff or durable as a better made case (so the rifle will slide around in it). Some folks here (tacomaworld) like the Apache cases from Harbor Freight but other than looking at them in the store I have no experience with them.

There are multiple mounting options out there (brackets, shelves, pucks, bolts, etc.- a google image search brings up lots of ideas), just find what works for you but I'm lazy, cheap and don't really want a visible gun case on my truck so when I got on-site I'd take the gun out of the cab and stick the partially zipped soft case behind the cab (with the gun loaded but nothing in the chamber). Easy enough to slide it in and out of the case when you stop and put it back in the cab for the trip to and from your hunting location. A bow is going to be a bit more unwieldy but I'd do the same with it. The only thing I leave on my rack year round is the bike tray and during the summer the kayak saddles; I take the fishing rod tube off if I'm not going to be using it. JMHO

Appreciate the info. Had never heard of Apache. Did another search and found this case with straps that I could pop open and grab shotgun or .22 without fear of hitting ground...

The straps look like a homemade job just attached with rivets and probably a fender washer on the inside to help keep them from fraying; I'd still use a hot point (ex. soldering iron, heated nail, etc.) to make the hole. I think most of the guys on ADV were using small gauge coated stainless wire (I haven't been on there since I sold my last bike though). I'd really be tempted to put a velcro strap in to make sure the rifle couldn't fall out when I opened the case -with my luck it fall out and land directly on the scope :homer:.
