When I remove the bracket from the OEM and pit it on the Joying, do I need to drill any new holes or is it a match?

It matches 2 out of the 4 holes, but thats enough to work.

    That's all I used. It's pretty secure.

After reading all 56 pages of this thread, I pulled the trigger and purchased the Joying 9" screen Android 10 stereo. It's scheduled to arrive on Dec 17 and I will install next weekend (Dec 18/19). Im planning to use CarPlay 98% of the time for music, podcasts, texts, calls, and navigation. I will install the Tablo app (OTA antenna app) so I can watch live tv from time to time as well.

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted tips, tricks, advice, troubleshooting options, personal experience, etc. I would have never purchased this unit if I had not stumbled across this thread! I now feel like I understand many (not all) of the pros and cons of the unit vs my OEM radio and also have a good understanding on how to install myself (I've never removed/installed a car stereo before).

Ill take some pics of the install process next weekend to share with the group - hopefully this can help others like all of you have helped me! My install should be very basic as I currently have the 7" non-JBL unit now with no amp/sub. I wont use the 4G SIM card option and wont install the external mic. I will also be sure to label the yellow backup camera wire with blue tape before I disconnect from radio to ensure I connect the right one to the new stereo. :)

Do I need to update the software before starting to add apps and customizing the settings on the Joying?

It should come with the most up to date software when you get it. So no need to update anything. I check online every few months for updates, I have updated 3 times now since I purchased mine in 2019.

While I see the worth in doing this, it's not needed. You just need to pay attention to which harness (that is hooked up to the OEM harness) that has the yellow female connection. The other side is labeled pretty well as to what it does (IIRC it says CAM IN).

Firmware has always been super easy for me to update. Put files on usb, plug in usb, let headunit automatically do thing, unplug usb. I think the bigger problem is figuring out which files you needed. But if you just find your cpu and android version its pretty easy.

Double check what firmware you have before you try to update again.
