Trying to read up, and understand features of my Tacoma. My build has the trailer Sway control. As I was reading up on things, I'm not clear as to how it can apply brake pressure to the individual trailer wheels...per this article, I've included?

I have a two place horse trailer, dual axel, but it doesn't have surge brakes, or any braking system. So, how does my truck do this? Please bear with my lack of knowledge here. I'm brand new to trucks, and whereas my Jeep Wrangler didn't have all these options.

" Sway Control first detects the sway and then puts measures in place to control the situation. Toyota TSC has a two-step process. First it detects the trailer sway often before the driver will. Then if automatically applies brake pressure to the individual trailer wheels. It also eases the engine torque. All these actions combined help to steady the trailer and the trailer cargo.

At the same time TSC is working to bring the trailer under control, it is also communicating with cars behind the trailer. The brake lights will go on to alert vehicles behind it that it is slowing down."

Well if you don't have trailer brakes...the truck isn't going to be engaging non-existent brakes. TSC does not apply

I didn’t know trailers could apply braking to individual wheels.

Nor did I. Hence my confusion, and my posted question.

I don't know anything about your TSC option on the Tacoma but from watching the video, here is what I do see:

    - The trailer in the video has no brakes and it's brake lights on the trailer are not engaging, only the brake lights on the truck are...
    - The TSC appears to stabilize first the Tacoma (by incrementally slowing down) and in so doing the trailer is also stabilized.
    - The tacoma itself has either transducers which monitor lateral forces on the suspension or is integrated with traction control and perhas monitoring wheel rpm/s and making microsecond (or faster) adjustments to vehicle speed until all four wheels are traveling at the same rpm's or are seeing the same lateral force. When the vehicle is stabilized . It may also have both...

I may not have the exact method but it looks to me like a very plausible and worthwhile option for trailering. I would talk to the a dealer mechanic certified and trained in the TSC option. I'm confident there is such a training course. The mechanic may not be very good at repairs but he'll at least understand the deployed technology. Best wishes to you and your horses!

I am not sure where you got your write up? It is inaccurate though. This is from page 267 of the owners manual. It does not mention applying the trailer brakes at all.

It only has the ability to control the vehicle brakes individually through the ABS system. If it does apply the trailer brakes then it would apply all of them.

Sounds like something to turn on if your driving tired. Recognizing sway....? Someone try it when not towing!
