Glad your dad is doing well! As for a replacement for the truck, the new GMC/Chevy is a solid truck. My dad has the Chevy 2500 diesel and is very happy with it. He only uses it for towing and plowing the driveway. It's relatively quiet and runs very strong. The Bully Dog chip for them makes it run smoother and helps the MPGs (although I'm sure that's not a selling point with a diesel, it helps). He gets 23 MPG unloaded FWIW.

good to hear. The new cummins are nice but I hear the trannys suck... I have never been too thrilled with the strokes... My FD has a newer SD as a maintenance vehicle. It is alright. I personally have never been a fan of the new power strokes. The older ones though are awesome. Seems like all the diesels have something bad with them. either the trans. is awesome but the engine sucks or so i have heard (chevy), or the engine sucks (ford), or the engine is awesome but the trans suck (dodge). lol good luck..

Glad he is ok. IMO you should really look into the Chevys I'm a ford guy but I'm pretty damn impressed with the newer Chevys I have drove a few of them and they ride like a damn cadilac. No offense but I think that the only good thing dodge has goin for them is the cummins motor

i know what ya mean thats the only reason why i owned a dodge otherwise it wouldve been a gmc or ford. being im unbiased towards any brand ive had my share of ford diesels and dont believe i would ever own another

After being waste deep in the top end of a Dmax, Im not impressed with them. They are tough engines, up to about 100K miles, then shit starts breaking. And unless you shit money, or have a pet leprechaun with a pot of gold, the parts are expensive.

Folks have a 2010 here, and no issues with the tranny at all. Its the best pulling/driving Dodge we have.

The auto trannys suck on dodge. They tend to go out at about 100k miles. I would get a dodge (pre 2010, for the solid axle in front) Cummins with a manual tranny.

yeah, one of the guys outta alaska that hunts with us, was telling me everyone up there drives a cummins or the powerstroke being about 65% cummins and 35% powerstrokes and being that ive had 3 6.0 powerstrokes i will never have another in my name so it either gotta be a cummins or something with a tractor motor would be nice

We replaced our '07 Cummins 2500 4x4 with a '10 Cummins 2500 4x4 this summer. I loved the '07, but the '10 is soo much nicer. Rides way more comfortably, 'bout the same mileage, nice OE gadgets that monitor all kinds of system functions. Love it.

the night before they were supposed to come home they went out and celebrated not drinking, on their way back ran off the edge of the road and over corrected and went through a drain ditch and took out a fence

The 2010's have a solida front axel too. (Dana 60, IIRC.), and we havent had any tranny issues with the new one, or others in the past.

Pretty suprising how much better the new ones ride.
