CV joint in rear drive shaft going out any good shop or suggestions??

So I have had a clicking getting progressively worse over the past couple months. I have found today that one of the U-joint caps in the CV on the rear drive line is loose. From what I know this isn't good and is most likely the cause.

Also the rear is lifted 1.5"-2" so the CV joint might be off just enough to cause wear but not noticeable vibration.

SO I have two questions.

What is the best way to have the drive line rebuilt, Can a drive shaft shop do this? If so any in the Columbia,SC area that are good.

Is a 3* shim in the axle to realign the drive shaft is the best way to cure this problem from happening again.

 

Greaseing is mostly reason for failure how often have you greased it, I don't think the 1.5 lift has that much effect on it.

 

Replace the U-joint. A shop can do it. You can do it if you do some research.

Aside from that.... the only other concerns you should have, is the condition of the 'ears' (where the u-joints fit into). If the ears are still good and not worn out or scored up or bent, you should be OK to just replace the u-joint.

I would replace the u-joint first (and anything else the shop or you might notice while changing it) and go from there. Replacing the u-joint might get rid of your vibrations altogether. Or...you might get worse ones...You'll have to see what happens.

 

start by just replacing the u joints and pumping grease into all your zerks and see if that fixes you up.adding a 3 degree shim when its not needed could make things way worse for you.

 

Alright I should have said I have greased it and know it is the CV joint. One of U-joint caps is loose so a new U-joint will probably not fit well (oblonged hole) and the double cadrian (CV) joint cannot be replaced at your home and some drive shaft shops wont touch them. They have a special spring and ball-socket type joint in the middle of the u-joints or else I would have replaced it no problem.

If any one knows where to get a re-manufactured rear drive shaft or one rebuilt locally let me know please.

 

I don't have any vibrations. I noticed a "click" that was getting worse. i have never had a vibration.

 

you could probably pick one up at a junkyard for 100$.

There is a fairly large group of folks competing with Rock buggys in SC NC GA TN. Drive shaft work even with the CV should be a non event. Skip at The Gulches Off-Road Park in Laurens County SC could point you in the right direction. I'd also check with the folks at NC4x4.com. Many of them run in competitions and can recomend a good shop in your area.

 

Not knowing what I was getting into, I tore into the rear driveshaft on my 94 Toyota and replaced all the u-joints, even the ones in the double cadrian joint. It wasn't easy and took several hours, but I did eventually get it all back together. If you have replaced U-joints before, I'd say tear into it yourself.

 

Word to the wise, if you do not have alot of patience, digging into you're shaft or double cadrian is no fishing trip, pull the whole driveshaft out both sections,and have a good machine shop do this for you, they can press the u joints out without incedent at a good shop,plus they might throw in a driveshaft balance as well when replacing the u joints. Trust me friend I am still missing hair over my last 1st gen Tacoma driveshaft overhaul.
