33"s vs. 32"s for a 4.0l V6 with stock X.XX (oops) 3.73 gears and an Automatic 5 speed (DCLB with a camper shell, no other added weight)?

Thinking about going with a 285/70R17 C rated tire but considering as 275/70R17 if it improves drivability and gas mileage.
I definitely don't want the added expense of re-gearing.
Thoughts?
Preferences?

Thanks for posting this. I as well have a 4.0l V6 with stock 4.56 gears and an Automatic 5 speed. Leer canopy. I’m literally debating the same two tire sizes. However my 2012 SR5 ACLB has the stock 16” wheels. I’m level with new BS 5100’s up front. I’m currently leaning towards the 275/70 17, Toyo AT3. Paired with 17x8 XD or Moto Metal wheels with a 0mm offset. I want a wider stance, but not to wide.

What brand of tire you goin with? Are you on stock 17’s?

I'll take a look at those. I've had my eye on these because they are light at 47 lb and are reported to have low rolling resistance. I've been trying to find a lightweight wheel in black that isn't crazy expensive. A lot more options in a 285 though

EDIT: The stock wheels are 16" but was planning on upgrading them anyway.

 

I went with skinny-255/85r16. Not your size per say, but a skinny 33. but I have been very happy and no regear needed. BFG KM3's on 3rd gen take offs.

Right on. Kumho are legit. And you are correct about having more options with 285’s.

I’m gonna assume you’ll get a 17” wheel for your spare. I haven’t looked under the bed at mine yet to see if there’s enough diameter to fit a 275/70 R17…is that at all something you’re worried about?

btw: I’m on 265/75 R16 (Toyota stock wheels) now.

I have no idea on the spare. I read a few post about what you can fit in the spare slot with a little hammering but don't recall. I was even thinking of just driving under 40 mph if I get a flat, depending on whatever difference I end up with. Didn't think about lug nuts or anything yet, they might not work with the original spare.

 

Ive been using 265/70/17 for my last 2 set of tires and love the size. Toyo Open country AT2 (not great tires in rain) and now Falken Wildpeak AT3W (love them). Ive got a mild .75" lift up front and I think that they still look great. When looking at tires that get up to 33" sizing, sometimes you run into the issue of working with 6 or 10ply tires now.

How do you use the truck? You're going to be spinning pretty high RPM on the freeway with 4.56 gears (factory gearing on the V6 is 3.73).

I'm on my second set of P285/70R17 Wildpeak AT3W tires. The P metrics are lighter than the LT of the same size. Not too many options for P metric in that size. Anyway, mine weigh in at 51 lbs. Great tire. Went 45k miles on the first set with 4/32" tread left. Rotated every 5k miles. If you are mainly street and some dirt there's no need for LT tires on a mid sized truck. Also, stock gearing 3.73 auto on 33's for over 220,000 miles. No need to regear. Plenty of power in the 4.0.
