Welp, I'm coming up on the 1-year mark for my 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport. This means that the "Toyota Connect" bullshit is expiring which means I will b losing my ability to start my truck remotely. Unless, of course, I start paying a subscription fee of $8/month - which I will not. That damn "service" only works half the time in the first place. Not to mention I refuse to pay for a remote starter that only works if there is a Wi-Fi connection to begin with.

So my question is if anyone has installed an aftermarket remote starter? Any recommendations for one that does not negate the truck's warranty?

Your unlock (or is it lock) 3 times from the keyfob might still work once subscription is deactivated. I’d assume it’s only the internet remote start that’s deactivated.

I didn't even know that was a thing. I was only told of the internet starting when I asked about remote starting. I guess I'll find out after the subscription runs out. I hate car dealers!!

If your remote start is fob-based as opposed to being run through your phone, I can’t see how it could be disabled by the mother ship. Me, I wouldn't pay them anything and see what happens. It’s rumoured that the next thing on their hit list is heated seats.

Yes the service can be a pos. For consistency with the crappy app I sign out of all apps I've opened throughout the day when I'm about to get off work then go into the toyota app. Sometimes it ask to re- sign in. It then usually works but it's finicky. For $8 monthly I can start my trucks blocks away or in my driveway and enter nice warm truck with heated seats for the price of a 6pk of beer.......

On my wife’s 2020 4Runner the remote start still works on the fob after toyota connect has expired. It also will on the Tacoma, you just can’t start it anywhere on the phone like before

My old lady drove my truck to work today. So out of curiosity I just started the truck from 3 miles away for her.. the app does need some work just an FYI. ~Cheers

UPDATE: This worked!! Except I could not shut if off remotely and had to physically open the door instead. But at least I have a Remote Start which means I don't have to incur any additional expenses.

This has been a hot topic on here for a while, and nobody knows for sure. I do know that I (2020 Limited) and many others lost the ability to start from the FOB after the remote connect expired.

The range of the OEM FOB is terrible. Go to N2 Designs and get the remote start with long range kit and you can put it in yourself. There are several threads on this. I did not want to pay a subscription and just wanted to be able to start my truck from my office on the 3rd floor with the truck 750 ft away. Works great.

    But is your subscription expired?
Most people know about the remote start with the fob. But does it still work after the one year trial is up?

This is an old thread. I have not subscribed to any of their trials at all. When my truck turns a year old then I will find out if it still works until then I am enjoying it. If it does die then I will see what my options are then.

Message Jimmy @N2DesignsInc, he'll get your straight. Remote start via app cost like $39 a year or $99/3years. Your Toyota remote start may be compatible with his cell module.
