I don't know enough to give you a difinitive answer. Would need to see a tcase on a factory manual hub truck.

There's a sensor in the case that triggers the ADD to actuate, maybe it's the same sensor that turns on the 4wd light, in which case there would be no difference in tcases.

I wouldn't give the shit that came out of it, plus bearing bits floating around, and especially given you can get a used case for $200.

 

I can't remember exactly what the tcase I had came from but I had to swap sensors with what came out of my truck.

 

That's encouraging. All my sensors are fine (to my knowledge).

 

It will be interesting to see whats in the oil.

If Monte is talking about the T case from my diesel then it's supposed to have less than 60,000 miles iirc. I rebuilt the engine just because and everything with that was still in spec as far as piston rings and bearings so I don't doubt it's not lowish miles

Edit: better take a few pics as well so I can do a rough visual inspection/comparison to mine, just to be sure it looks good.

 

So you got me curious Dan, I think all top shift J shift cases are the same, just with the sensors added/omitted as needed. So trans, locker, add, abs doesn't matter, as long as it wasn't a 2.7 auto.

Best thing I can think to do is buy a tote from Walmart or something and send it in that?

 

For shipping, here are some ideas. This is how mine was shipped. That is a piece of plywood that the tcase is wired down on. The UPS Ground shipping label says it weighed 90 lbs.

 

I can't seem to find the listing in my purchase history on ebay to see what it said but I did save the listing photos to my phone. Here are a couple. Could maybe look up this company to see what they say about their stuff?

First off - thanks to all of you guys. This willingness to help and sharing of info is a beacon of light in the wasteland that is the internet. Geeze, I'm such a sap.

I'm thinking the same thing. Zane @Speedytech7 sent me an entire manual for the t-case (a Toyota tech learning guide or some such - #302). Anyway, it describes the entire workings of the transfer case - gearing, levers, sensors, etc. From reading it, my conclusion is the same as yours - the cases are all the same, but various sensors (based on features of the truck) interact with those features (and the respective ECUs) as the case is shifted from one position to another.

As an example, the rear diff lock requires 4Lo, so the t-case has a 4Lo sensor (or some do) that lets the 4WD ECU know when it's in 4Lo. The same sensor is used to disable ABS, on trucks with ABS.

Anyway. Seems pretty reassuring.

Looks to me like Mike's way is better, but you're the one on site with the thing. I trust whatever you think "secure" is. As you know, UPS and FedEx consider any packaging a challenge, and you surely don't want to let them win. Or at least, I don't want you to let them win.

I should say - I'd obviously like this as soon as possible, but I'm also in no rush. I know you're a busy dude, so whatever works for you. I certainly won't actually install it till after Christmas, and likely after New Years.

 

Will get it figured out. I have some plywood. Don't have a box like that or anything else like the padding. But sure I can get it.

Same, just sitting there. Hoping to put some more time into it this winter. Want to get it fully mounted by moving the Trans bracket/shortening the driveline and getting the shorter r151 input shaft into the Trans. Few other side mechanical things to do to help just move it along. Really need to go back through all my notes and spreadsheets and double check my wiring.

 

Huh mine has what looks like an adapter plate to the auto? And a shifter is in the adapter. Kind of interesting.

 

Yup. That one doesn't have a shifter on the tcase. Mine looks like the one Brett posted earlier.
