Then why did it work fine for almost four years? The head unit itself doesn't use a lot of power, and the amplifier uses less than 10 amps; I've got no idea what the subwoofer uses, but that can be shut off.

I believe the alternator has been ready to go for weeks, I jumpstarted a former coworker's Altima on Friday night, and I believe that was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.

I knew I was going to have to replace the alternator soon, but I didn't think it would go from only charging the battery when the truck was moving to totally failing in a matter of hours. I probably am going to put in a beefier alternator, but this one will hold me over until I find the right one.

My friend Dave knows of a company that specializes in alternators for Toyota trucks and I'm gonna see if they can make me a 200 amp unit!

It probably struggled and got you by and was damaged over time.

Ive had to replace my alternator on nissan titan shortly after jump starting someone. It can be the last straw on a weak alternator

Nope, not at all. I think you may have misread my post. I was just referring to the fact that with your frame recently replaced, maybe there was a slight possibility something got dorked up along the way during the replacement. More than likely though it's the alternator itself.

I agree. If the vehicle isn't idled up to 1500 rpm or higher it sure can put a load on it.

    All stock, baby!
Three weeks ago, I was asking, “how did my alternator go from spinning just fine one day, to completely seized up three days later?” We can ponder all day long the whys and wherefores of these things, but in the end it comes down to “they gonna fail when they want to”.

    Stock, 4WD, Access Cab, White,
Charlie......a few points for you to consider.

A battery is easy to remove for placing in a garage for charging. It'll take less room in the garage than the truck.

Alternators are commonly rebuilt units. This is typically what is purchased at the auto stores. This is why the cost is so much lower than from Toyota or any car maker. They can be hit or miss.

You just had the frame replaced, everything has been touched. It maybe worthwhile to check for bad connections, misrouted wires, poor grounds...etc. Many parts and connections were handled.....mistakes happen.

If your $$ are tight, it is in your favor to run diagnostics first. Perhaps an alternator is not needed. Don't load and fire the parts cannon just on a thought. Run the diagnostics. Generally, diagnostics are cheap to perform.

Yep especially if the vehicle you are jumping has issues...which typically it does if needs jumped. If the person just left lights on and it drained its not so bad but having a dead cell in a battery and trying to jump it is hard on your vehicles alternator.

Charlie, I was thinking about the encounter you described, and I just wanted to point out that you don't know her situation, either. Consider the possibility, for instance, that someone close to her was hurt or killed in an accident caused by someone who was distracted while using their cellphone. You driving while being on the phone could easily have triggered her in that situation. If you want someone to cut you a little slack, you need to be willing to do the same.

It's hard in the moment to consider things like that, but along the lines of what @Plain Jane Taco said, this encounter wouldn't have happened had you just made or taken that call while parked. Sure, it may not be illegal in PA, but it's fairly well-documented at this point that it can be a significant distraction. As small things can blow up in unpredictable ways, it's best to avoid them when they're in our control.

The vehicle I jumped was a 2012 Nissan Altima with the 2.5L engine, which the owner by her own admission said was a piece of shit; The truck ran for a few minutes hooked up to the Altima, and then I revved the engine of my truck before she started the Altima. The Altima started right up without hesitation, and they immediately went to Walmart to pick up a new battery.

The 2012 Altima I jumped was later determined to be in severe need of a new battery; The car started right up and they immediately drove to Walmart to buy a new one...

I'm lazy, LOL; My dad just cleaned the garage so I deemed it easier to garage the truck for the night. I am headed over to my neighbor's house right now and we are going to test the alternator. Another member also suggested Disconnecting the battery while the truck is running, and if the truck shuts off immediately, the alternator is bad; I understand that the frame was just replaced, but I seriously cannot fathom how one loose connection could make the battery light come on, make the headlights pulsate in perfect unison with the idling engine, disable the ABS, disable the traction control, disable the HVAC blower motor, and shut down the stereo at the same time...

    :annoyed:
