I was watching flannel daddy recently and he got on the topic that a lot of other experienced team guys are on: Sight heights. With the mods done to those older gen's with the "carrying handles" the sights were so much easier to use. I recently swapped to 1.93" height optics and risers and it's been a world of difference.
Check this out if you have not seen it:

Right around 5 minutes is when the talking about sight heights begins.

While but don’t usually care for either him or Botkin he does have some worthy topics at times.

An A2 with a Colt carry handle scope is still the most comfortable set up I have tried so far.

GT is try-hard/cringe but not bad info.

Botkin is just a clown and is sketchy on a few levels.

Perhaps it’s a character flaw with me personally but I can’t stand elitist people. Botkin’s video on the M&P sport was kinda tha nail in the coffin for me. Idk maybe it feels personal as they talk down about “lower tier” equipment I just do t see a need for it. We should all be celebrating with trumpets on high everytime another person makes an AR purchase especially their first.
There was an interesting video from PSA after GT reviewed one of their AK’s if their response to his feedback was legitimate then kudos to both sides

Your correct a higher mount makes it more comfortable to shoot. IF you watch Forgotten Weapon with LAV Colt 723 it's been done a long time ago. LAV talks about the armorer milling out part of the carry handle and screwing on picatinny rail section. I'm actually building another A2 carry handle upper and found some old school Aimpoint to go with it. Here the video with Forgotten Weapon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6zfTYQ09Rs

Got some parts in today a2 receiver tear drop forward assist, rear sight assembly and port door. Thanks sharing GT video I enjoy his content.

I remember taping mags and using 550 cord for something to grab out the bottom of mags. Was so simple back then. Kind of makes you laugh looking at gear from then vs. now. I know that video is from 2019 but the setup that vickers talks about was ran early "OIF" days. Lotsa guys were still running MP5's then too. Hell, my first deployment I had a full size M16, and I loved it. I actually missed it when I swapped to the m4 platform. The adjustable stock was total crap back then and most of us taped that too lol.

kind of like this, but less shitty:

Then you tape TF out of the bottom after. I never did the combo mag thing with tape tho. Wasn't for me. Too bulky.

I swore I'd never own a AR pistol. I have a regular AR with a 16" barrel, and 2 that I stamped as SBR's. Wanted something small I could take on road trips without filling a ATF Form 5320.20, that your supposed to file anytime you take a SBR out of state.

Put together a 7.5" AR, but can't stand the rubber and plastic braces. I put a Tailhook Mod 1 brace on a 9" buffer tube on it. At least it's all metal. Have the same set up on my Mossberg Shockwave.

    Pretty small.

while I’ll be the first to talk shit about YouTube personalities, even sof guys that like to give watered down information, most guys that “hate elitist” are the guys that also like to think that their $150 Amazon China optic is “just as good as.” It’s a two way street.

Some people are professionals, probably few here, but do use professional grade equipment. If that makes them elite, then it is what it is. When you suffer through the training and the job, you earn the opinion.

The crossover is competitors, who also use fancy gear. And I mean real competitors, in nationals league competition. Not “local.”

The reality is there are two people, hobbyist and the serious. In between are gear queers that get lost in the sauce. Kind of like guys that collect tools and don’t know how to use them.

lower tier is just that though, lower tier. Do we celebrate on high every time some one throws an eBay spacer lift on their Tacoma? No you don’t because spacers aren’t as good as icons or kings or insert any better brand. His video on the M&P sport was great IMO, it showed that with a good amount of training you can shoot and run one of the most basic built rifles and still run it fast and accurate. The issues with cheaper guns is it lacks QC and subpar materials used. Sure you’ll get a few from lower tier manufacturers that last but overall they don’t last like a gun from a better manufacturer.

i think there are very few people that are not happy when someone buys or builds a new AR, but when those people say that their psa ar with a 30 dollar sight mark reddot with an olight is just as good as someone with a knights or lwrc that has eotech, aimpoint, surefire, modlite, geissele, etc etc then you’re delusional.

PSA has done great things and is continuing to do great things for the gun community but when they turnout the volume of guns they do and that price point you’ve got to cut corners somewhere and that’s normally QC. They’re aware of that and its one reason they have the warranty program they do as well.

My ARs don't even have serial numbers. I must be a real lowlife dirtbag.

I know it's not really relevant to this discussion but I have a complete WTF example of this. Former neighbor was an independent tool sales rep and had a 40x80 shop about 50% full of demo tools and 50% sales brochures on those tools but didn't know how to use a single one. Came home one day to clouds of smoke, looked over in his driveway and he was cutting a wood pallet down with a grinder. His wife called me to assemble a basketball goal for their kids one time because he had started it and was getting so worked up she was worried he was going to have a heart attack.

If you read all that and think that a serial number makes a part quality then idk what to tell you. But I’m not shitting on your 80% lowers my guy.

I agree with this, not that it makes any difference. I guess my issue is I just don’t get folks talking down about others or their stuff. If it’s a legitimate conversation and somebody is explaining the differences that make one better than another I’ll listen to that with full attention. If it’s somebody on YouTube with a bunch of high end equipment most can’t afford and picks up a basic rifle and calls it junk I don’t appreciate that but it’s just me we all have our own things.

I have a 16” radical 556 and it shoots very well and have had no issues with it granted I only have about 600 rounds through it
