Hey folks, I am career toyota owner but spent 2 years in a 2019 GMC Sierra. Loved the truck but reliability was frustrating so I ditched it for another tacoma...a 2021. Many things on the GMC were lightyears ahead of the taco, namely the audio system, touch screen and remote start.

Does anyone know how to adjust the time on the remote start?

Does anyone know how to keep the remote start running instead of shutting off when you open the door?

When I go to work in the morning I start the truck from inside while I get my crap together but by the time I am ready to go, its off and the windshield is still frozen. If I manage to start it again, and it is running when I get outside, I open the door to get my snowbrush out, it shuts off. I have to reach in with one hand and press down on the brake pedal while I try and start it again so it runs while I clean the snow off.

    Very frustrating.

    Cheers

You're probably not going to get around the Toyota's anti theft feature.

With my experiences with remote starts and I can say Toyota sucks.
The running time is 10 minutes while all my other vehicles with after market ran 15 minutes and they would not die when opening a door.
You have to live with it or get an after market autostart but not sure if it can be installed on a already factory installed one on the Taco.

I hate the engine shutting off too. Pointless but is what it is. No way around it.

Isnt kinda bad for the engine to shut off and then restart? Especially if someone uses the remote start everyday?

Not really, especially if you build heat into it.

The only way around it is if you had a version of the truck which takes a physical key. Yes, the shut off can be annoying, but it is better than someone stealing your truck. And, yes, that can happen even without the key fob; and that isn't unique to Toyota.

Make sure you're set to defrost and the truck should have ample time to get some heat into the engine. What I do is start it about 10 minutes early. If I need additional time (i.e. there's 3" of snow on the truck) I'll open the door and actually start the truck. I'm less worried about someone stealing it if I'm actually there. Yes it is an extra step but, like anything, you get used to it.

Using remote start in no way increases the chances of your truck getting stolen. And it shutting off when you open the door doesn't do anything to prevent theft either. That's my beef with it.

I agree with you but also no one can open the doors when truck is running or not without the FOB near it.

No, but starting your vehicle and leaving it unattended does. Fun fact, you can start your truck and walk away and it will still be able to drive away without the key fob. Ask me how I know...

If you start it with the fob it'll let you. But the dash tells you... Pretty hard to miss.

Robmotive did this in one of his videos. Started the truck, put the fob in the garage and drove away.

Aftermarket auto starter and a manual transmission and both your problems will go away.

My first gen would only shut off if you hit the brake and try to put it in gear. You could open the door without it shutting off.
But looks like the 3rd gens has more anti theft shit

One option would be to have your wife or girlfriend go out and keep it running till you are ready to leave. Then it wouldn't shut down. Then you have it monitored for problems. I had a factory frost plug heater blow out back in the 70's on a 350 small block while idling in my driveway.

I saw this happen with a Chevrolet Silverado at a car dealership so I decided to try it with my truck. I started it (not remote start) and gave the fob to my significant other. I then drove the truck away from her. Basically, it tells you it doesn't detect the key fob, but you can still drive it. What's more is you can't lock it except manually. My theory for this is that this means you're not dead in the water if your key fob dies since you can still start the truck by holding it in a certain spot but it wouldn't be able to detect the fob otherwise.

As for remote start, I'm not sure if other methods of theft prevention are patented or if they just chose to shut off the engine as their method. I know with the physical key version it'll still run when you open the door but it doesn't have the key in the ignition so as soon as you hit the brake it shuts off. I'm guessing there's a programming issue which prevents that with the push to start version
