The 4WD part of his case is fine. It's the bearing that support the input shaft through the reduction planetary gearset that's broken/siezing

based off the parts diagrams the front case half fits auto or manual v6 trucks.. so it might work to put an a/t case on a manual? but honestly... no clue

Don't know for sure. Input shaft is what Zane said just from listening to it and cycling through the various gears. Probably just need to open it up and look to see what all needs replacing.

I'd probably do all the bearings, at the very least.

My plan has always been to rebuild mine in addition to getting a replacement one. The replacement would just let me get back out on the trail more quickly.

    4 run, 2 don't
Diff lock would have no bearing on the J shift.

The input gears are different between an I4 and V6; you need a 23 spline.

I can't comment on the difference when mated to one transmission vs another.

I checked a couple others. car-part has quite a few; looking through the list now.

It's different in the Toyota parts list; perhaps due to the 4Lo sensor, which enables the diff lock to engage, and helps to disable the ABS.

As others have mentioned the diff lock, add, abs doesn't matter at all. You just need a MT or AT V6 23 spline J-Shift case. The manual and auto cases are actually different. The manual trans cases have a longer input shaft and the automatic cases have a tiny hole in the side of their shafts for some reason. There is also something going on in the manual cases with these extra little shift keys. I've seen 2 or 3 people use an automatic 23 spline j-shift case in their manual R150F trans swaps with no issues. But no one has confirmed the opposite is possible.

I was going to try it until my donor manual trans case turned out to be full of rust and seized from water damage. If I were you I'd personally avoid the automatic cases even though others haven't had issues and the shorter spline engagement is probably fine.

As for the sensors on the top of the transfer case it really doesn't matter. Cases that don't use a sensor just cap it off with a drain plug and crush washer. Just move your sensor plugs over from your old transfer case or buy news ones (like $30-$40 a piece). I'd also replace the shifter seat on the transfer case shifter since I've yet to see on that was still intact. It's like the gear oil turns them into a sludge. Marlin Crawler sells plastic replacements.

Awesome, thanks! This is great info.

In your experience, what's the best way to evaluate a t-case prior to purchase to ensure (as much as possible), success/smooth functioning?

I found this one, which looks interesting: 2000 Toyota Tacoma Transfer Case Assembly-Stock# 1KE036 (car-part.com)

fluid condition is a good tell tale sign of things inside. and if it goes into the gears. past that not much you can check without installing it and driving it, or completely tearing it down

The one I posted, appears - to me - to be missing the fill plug entirely, which I assume means no oil in it at all. If that's the case, stay away?

That one honestly looks really nice. If it were low miles of course. The fatal mistake I made on the transfer case donor I grabbed two years ago was just checking to see if it shifted and the output flanges spun. I didn't look at the input shaft at all which was fully seized. And like @Empty_Lord said the fluid inside.

they drain them at the yard. but the theyre never empty empty. it appears to have a plug insalled. albeit its not a stock one. that massive hole isnt really a hole, just the casting where push button t cases would have an actuator
