285/75R17 Perfect Size on 3rd Gen

All tacomas should have a regear unless they are just a daily stock driver that doesn't tow.

Gussets are more about the type of offroading you do rather than tire size. There just happens to be a huge correlation between tire size and offroading type.

The choice between 33-35" tires should be based around how much work you want to do to the body&frame. Wether you want to do a CMR, CMC, or not at all, if you are interested in trimming fenders or not.

 

Very interested in 285/75r17 since it seems the only route to getting ~34" on a 17" wheel.

Concerned about the massive hike in weight from ~40# for stock tires to ~60# on 285/75r17 KO2 since they only seem to come in E load rating.

Does anyone have suggestions for a tire this size that is still as functional as KO2s, without being such a fat goddamn pig?

 

I am running this tire. Is the weight noticeable compared to a 40lb 16"? Yes. But I also added weight with the wheel as well. You could look into the Toyo AT 3 which does come in a "C" load rating but per there web site it is only 1lb lighter than the "E" rated. 59 vs 60. It is just something that just needs to be accepted and deal with it. I still need to regear which should help a lot for both accelerating and braking then should be a lot less noticeable. Side note: I am only running 23-25psi.

 

Got alignment done today at Duggy and a lot of trimming. So far Im happy. The truck still move but its more sluggish than stock. Good thing I live in Houston Texas so I can get by but still will have it regear or maybe supercharge in the near future...

Btw, SCS announced the price increase today. Its a sad thing for those including me who need to get wheels. Im looking for a single BR6 -38 as a spare myself

 

You could go for the KO2 in 34 x 10.5 x 17 D load only 55 lbs.

 

I looked into this size and for some reason the retail on that size were over $100 US more per tire than the 285/75/17.

 

Regear and get a tune if you want to gain back some power loss from all the added weight.

Got a chance to drive a stock 2021 Tacoma, and mines feels punchier than a stock Taco.

The guy on the phone from Discount Tire just told me that BFG just told him directly that this size is on nationwide backorder with no ETA.

I just put a set on order. Running an OME BP51 kit after getting the CMR done. Hoping 2.5" is enough.

 

No. Not for real. You'll be fine. That was terrible advice. Maybe a CMC, maybe not. Most likely you'll be fine for DD stuff.

 

Do you have a cab mount chop/relocate?

I'm running the DRT relocate as-of last week.

 

Depends on the offset and since that lift doesn't have UCA's, probably gonna rub. I thought a CMC is the same as CMR?

Relocate is a little more aggressive and requires extra hardware.

 

Yea, too many variables. Anything negative offset, probably gonna rub. I have a zero offset with UCA's so that helps. That's a solid kit though. Will be nice to see when it's done.
