It they can speed up the start engine feature and make the engine stay on when opening the door, yeah.

The way it is now, I barely use it during my free trial.

how much do i have to pay for a 15 seconds option to turn off lights when I exit the truck. 30 seconds is way to long.

No one is bitching about the fact that you have to pay for the "remote start from anywhere" that can only be accessed through your phone (or at least far fewer are bitching about that). People are upset that toyota said their key fob will not work for remote start (I'm talking like line of sight to your truck) once the subscription is expired either. The key fob is RF, no cell service required. Just proximity to the vehicle. This should work no matter what. Plus you are paying a ridiculous amount for the vehicle to begin with, and the remote start equipment is included in your vehicle cost, so why should you have to pay $80 a year to use your fob for this feature? My 2008 silverado that I just traded in had remote start on the fob (not cell phone) and no subscription required. Not to mention toyota just "allowed" 2018 and older model year vehicles to keep the fob remote start because toyota has no way of charging them for the other app related BS because those vehicles are all running 3G chips which has just just been phased out. So the fob working has absolutely nothing to do with cellular

My subscription expires next August, so I’ll wait to get confirmation that the fob button remote start either works or doesn’t without the paid service. I never use the app to remote start the truck.

I live in NH and the truck is kept on the driveway, so a remote start is nice feature. I had an aftermarket unit on my 2010.

I do need to call my insurance company to see if I can get a discount from using the driver monitoring service. My average “driving score” is a 96 and they claim this would earn a potential discount.

I could also be convinced to keep it given I have a 15 year old who will be driving shortly. It might be nice to have a “big brother watching” feature (especially knowing what I did with cars as a teenager).

It is pretty annoying to have to pay a subscription for key fob remote start given my wife’s Honda Pilot includes it for free.

My service expired the beginning of November and my remote start with the fob worked this weekend. Be interesting to see if it does stop. Hardly ever use it though so no big loss.

It has been posted in at least 2 places on reddit and you are right, people are up in arms on there.

According to the info posted several times earlier in this thread, Toyota said the keyfob will continue to work without a paid subscription to Remote Connect for all vehicles built after November 2018.

Nobody knows for sure what will happen with the fob though. It has been confirmed by members here that the fob works after the remote connect expires. So again, this was to cause outrage to drive clicks or views. So yes, everyone is bitching about the fact you have to pay or not reading.

Rural BC, home has iffy cell service, work in the bush has no cell service. I don't even bother with data on my phone. Salesman was mildly annoy when I told him I had no intention of downloading an app or registering a subscription. This is the first vehicle I've had with remote start and most of the time I forget I even have it. Maybe I'll learn to use the fob regularly, probably not though.

You are correct. We dont know what will happen. I haven't seen one person who's vehicle can be confirmed built after 11/12/2018 and before 12/14/2018 confirm that their key fob remote start works. Many 2019s were built before that date and are grandfathered in, and 2020s would still be within the 3 year service range as well as most of the 2019s (the only ones that wouldn't be in that range are 2019s built between 11/12/18 - 12/14/18 which is a pretty small window). It's supposed to work for 3 years or 10 years from date of purchase (the window gets even smaller for who would be experiencing this right now) depending on what audio package you get. And if you read other articles other than just this thread, some claim to have reached out to Toyota and had Toyota confirm that the fob will no longer work once the trial has expired.

"Though the thread on Reddit was eventually labeled "Potentially Misleading" by moderators after garnering hundreds of comments, Toyota's response to The Drive was unequivocal: A paid subscription is required for the key fob's remote start function to work..." - The Drive

I always wondered why they couldn’t program it to stop the engine if vehicle is put into a drive gear with no fob being detected in or around the cab.

I would imagine that Chrome OS will make a bigger presence. People see it as a cheap, but it is actually Linux based.

They could have. There's no valid reason to kill the engine when you open the door (assuming the fob is detected). Adding no extra sensors at all they could look for the fob, and if it's not detected, kill the engine if the door opens, the brake is pressed or the car leaves gear and be just as theft proof. If it is detected they could keep the engine running. This bothers me more than paying for the service. :anonymous:

This is just how so many companies are finding ways to fleece more $$$ out of customers. On-star has been ripping off GM customers for years now with a subscription model but at least you get notifications about your vehicle codes, remote unlocking of doors, vehicle tracking, theft shutdown, etc.

Yeah and to be honest a chromebook would do 80% of what I do with my home PC. I also run a Plex server and rip media to my collections but most all of that can run on Ubuntu. There are also MS office suite replacements that work well. Chrome is also mostly attached to Google hardware while I can build my own system and use any open source linux distribution I like.

I’ve been using Pop!_OS and I have a System 76 computer. Pop!_OS is based off of Ubuntu, but System 76 is going way from Ubuntu little by little.
