If that is indeed what it is, yes. Was going to just swap another transmission in and do a full rebuild on what I pull out. Was hoping to make a trip to Southern Idaho and southern Oregon between Xmas and new years but I'm not feeling super confident in the Shitbox and it'll likely be a solo trip.

 

Picked up a case today. Doesn't have (what I think is a) diff lock sensor - basically a 4Lo sensor - but otherwise looks to be in reasonable shape and has (they say) only 80K miles on it.

Thanks to EVERYONE for the help so far. I'm sure my questions have been just the tip of the iceberg as I start digging into this. I certainly do enjoy learning all of this.

I got two functional trucks and no time.

Hopefully got everything sorted and can head back up that way more next summer.

 

$300 for the case + $50 core charge (which I'll be eating, since I want to keep my original case) + tax, so like $385 or something. Seems reasonable enough given I got to look at it before buying, didn't have to pay shipping, reasonably low miles, and I got it quickly. I'm sure I could have searched around for longer, or driven to a neighboring state and found something for $200-300, but at this point in my life, that's not worth it for me. I'd rather get back out on the trail!

Jeezus. That's almost what I paid for my truck brand new. But, I know how the market is these days, and certainly low miles. My plan - for now anyway, perhaps I'll regret it in the future - is to wait for the whole used-truck premium to blow over sometime in 2022/23 and then pick one up. Thanks for keeping an eye out though, certainly appreciate it!

2005 and 2006 Tacoma's are well documented to have bad head gaskets. They made a change to it in 2007. On the used market they trade for less because of this. Usually they go north of 150k but I am guessing age plays a factor as well. Same thing happened to Nate's white truck like clockwork.

I saw where it said it was the 4 but the listing is 'typical features". I now see the pic of the tailgate. And I totally missed the fact that it was an extracab. Was thinking it was a dcab.
