My 2018 SR5 4x4 Access Cab is paid off. It has 55k miles. I have been offered $28k trade-in for it (although I believe it’s worth $30k trade in for my region).

    Should I:

    • Keep it. It runs great, it’s paid off, it doesn’t have a ton of extras but it does what I need it to do.
    • Take the $28k trade and get a new 2022 TRD Off Road. Pluses: dual climate, Apple CarPlay, LED headlights, Locker/MTS/Crawl. I’d end up financing what, like $13k-$15k?
    • Wait for more availability of new 2022 Tundras, hopefully by May or June, take hopefully $25k-$27k for trade. I’d want an SR5, optioned out to be in the $47k-$49k range. This would be a much bigger financed amount but would be way more vehicle too.

I vote on getting what you really want. Sounds like you would prefer the tundra. Enjoy not having a car payment and wait until next summer.

It’s kind of silly to me to want a Tundra. It’s really only for the size and the power. I hardly ever tow, I don’t have kids, I have yet to haul more than 1000 pounds, etc. So it’s kinda superficial for me to want a bit more cabin space and double the torque than the taco has. Especially for what they’re asking for even a spartan-optioned SR5 Tundra. Good grief, like $52k.

so that’s why I started thinking that a better taco is way more within my ideal budget and asking do I really need more truck than that?

I won’t aftermarket upgrade this Tacoma for several reasons, but 80% of the reason is because I’d want a double cab next time, not an access cab. Can’t exactly buy an aftermarket fix for that!

Get ready for the "financing anything is the instrument of the devil and will ruin you" crowd to tell you not to finance anything and unless you can pay cash keep what you have. To me, as long as you're not getting in over your head you should drive what makes you happy. The Tacoma and the Tundra are two very different trucks. Answering if you have a need for a full size truck or if that's what you'd prefer to drive should be your first priority and will answer the rest of it for you.

Keep your current truck and upgrade as you can.

No need for a new shiny object if your's isn't broken.

My used Tacoma will never be worth this much again. I can get what I paid for it 30,000 miles ago. It’s like I’ve been driving a truck for free for 2+ years.

that’s the only reason for wanting something new and shiny. Plus I cannot upgrade the head unit and keep all the functionality and integration. I cannot add dual climate. I cannot add power seats. I cannot add crawl control but I can add a locker. There’s a ton of upgrades throughout by switching to a TRD off road.

Sounds like you really want a double cab and that new dual control climate. I still don’t understand the purpose of it, but sure I guess if the passenger is not feeling the temp that’s inside the cabin. I’d say if you are off tomorrow go into your local dealer and work some numbers out. Make sure you get the color you want don’t settle for less.

We sold my brothers 2017 sport for 35k, think you could get more selling it yourself, then look for a used off-road or sport DCLB

Still can’t shake that feeling of wanting a Tundra!
    -cool new look
    -tons more room
    -tons more power
    -similar mpgs to Tacoma
    -better towing and payload
    -better driving aide systems
    -better headlights
    -better rear suspension setup
    -rear disc brakes
    Etc.

but they are SO MUCH MONEY

I'd keep the 18 Tacoma, paid off, 55k miles, runs great right?

    Option 1:
If you are seriously considering buying a 2022 I'd do this:
Sell that 2018 now, bank the cash, buy a piece of sh*t that gets you around town.

When the dust settles and more are available without additional mark-up buy the 2022 ( Tacoma )..
Sounds like the Tundra is over-kill.

    Option 2:
Drive that 2018 another 5 years... then figure out where you are.

in my state, they take trade in value off your sales tax bill on the new vehicle, Which is thousands $$. So unless I could get $6k-$8k more selling private party, it wouldn’t be worth the hassle

edit: I’m not sure how that sleeping unicorn got in here but imma go with it

Ordinarily I'd say buy the new vehicle you really want... and then run it into the ground before you buy another new one. However, in this case it sounds like you didn't get what you really wanted the first time, and the market's unique circumstances might allow you to apply close to 100% of its original purchase price towards what you really want - a proverbial "do over" if you will.

SO, if you can get what you really want this time around (A DC TRD Off-Road?) and not pay a premium over MSRP (which would undermine the "do over" factor tied to your AC SR5), I say go for it. Then you can make any future improvements to the truck you really wanted and not be in any hurry to do anything else with it other than run it into the ground. And in the meantime, once the new delta financing is paid off, take that monthly payment and INVEST it in something that will grow over time, not depreciate.

Sell it privately. That is low mileage and should easily fetch another $5000

I’ll keep the thread updated. For now I’m doing nothing . . . . will decide by Jan what I’m gonna do, because the 2018 needs front rotors and pads soon, so the clock is ticking. If I’m going to spend money on brakes, that makes keeping it far more likely.
