I do change the o-ring once a year or so, so maybe that makes a difference for me as well.

    Ok, question for the group.

Thursday, we are getting the wood burning chimney in our house professionally cleaned and inspected. The previous *ahem* occupants burned salt treated lumber in it. Realistically, how much soot and dust should I expect inside my home? Do I need to drape everything in sheets?

I would think so too, but I just don't know. Only 31 and just bought our first house this past May. Everything is new to me.

I had stove and pipe cleaned. They had a good vacuum but there still will be small amount of dust. They cant contain it all. They even said so before hand.

Id ask what all they do.

@My Name is Rahl - an extra layer of protection would never be a bad idea. Bonus if it's not needed.

Says the guy that's only ever had gas fireplaces...

I think we're going to cover everything anyway. Too many places for dust to land in the living room, not counting the Christmas tree.

Repair hole in my side wall of my home. Never leave your power tools where you wife can find them. The little woman wanted her tv bracket hung on the wall, but couldn't wait for me. So she took on the project herself, drilled a hole clear through the stud and out of the house through the vinyl siding. I asked her she managed to go that far through the wall, she said she used a long spade bit I had in the basement on my work bench which was on the extension i use for going through multiple studs when running wires. Needless to stay I have a 1/2 in hole straight through my wall on my second floor. Looking forward to fixing this. any recommendations. I was thinking of driving a wooden dowel into the hole and patching the vinyl and sheet rock.

I started tearing out plaster upstairs in my 1.75 story to replace with drywall because I'm tired of chasing cracks. I'm also adding HVAC and an exhaust fan in the bathroom. Any other suggestions while I'm at it?

I was surprised to see foil backed insulation, pleasantly surprised, in house built in 1946. Upstairs was finished later, I'm thinking 60s by judging the electrical wire.

Thats not funny, but it is hilarious. As someone who has been nursing a bad back for a couple years, i've been having my wife do a lot of work for me at my direction. I cant complain because she takes it on, but if youre not watching with a power tool in her hand all hell can break loose. There is no half speed, its full in power and be ready to say stop. All that said, initiative is big. Although thats a major screw up, kudo's to her for trying.

Dowels not a bad idea for the exterior. if you can fit it tight, glue it, loose use caulk. No clue how to repair vinyl

Lucky. My 60's home has zero insulation in the walls.

What sort of wire is it? My house is from 1966 and the NM cable is the same as it is today, only instead of a vinyl outer sheathing its cloth mixed with some fort of foil.

Cloth outer with half size ground. I’m probably going replace it all, too easy and I’ve already done so downstairs. Actually yeah that’s going to happen.
