How many here drove on Walnut Sawdust Tires? Waiting for Nylon Cords to warm up and stop bouncing. They have come a long way since then. Today people are so spoiled they missed out on all the good stuff to drive on. It just keeps getting better till it don't work, you lift the hood and say OH Crap wonder what just went wrong and why it won't start. It is nice not setting points and adjusting the Carb every 10K or so but they were sure easy to see why it was not starting. Fixed with just a screw driver and a Match Book Cover . I love my clean new engine it is so pretty!!

 

I own a manual, have driven many autos, and I have never experienced any traction advantages or disadvantages. If anything the auto has the advantage of shifting smoother. Not sure what you guys are smoking.

The one thing that I have experienced is that a 2wd manual is easier to rock back and forth than a 2wd auto, however this is moot with 4wd because the front tires dig into the snow making the rocking technique less applicable.

 

For extra weight little plywood under 1/4" Plate Steel works great too and you still have room in the bed. I want to weigh my front and rear tires to see what added would balance them for the best traction. Used to do it with air pressure to make all tires have the same foot print when I raced off road. Makes for full 4 tire slides not just the rear end going out from under you..

 

Have to agree Autos are nice on a steep hill to get going on ICE easier to apply the HP to the wheels then trying to slip the clutch just right. Both have pros and cons. Even the Military has went to Automatics.

@Willy-N Growing up in Central New York your snow experience hits home; so many people don't take time to slow down and adjust to the conditions of the road. You seem to know how to adapt and improvise, good luck learning the new technology of your truck.

We are talking more "at speed" such as doing 35 in a 60 during a blizzard going down a pass... I have an old 07 manual tacoma and a 2021 4runner pro... the tacoma I can put in 4th and let the engine low rep down the pass, the 4runner switches from 3 to 4 over and over applying abs where needed... I just prefer being on the back side of the power curve the tires can't slip if they are in low rpm (under 1k)

 

Toyota needs to engineer headlight lenses that melt ice and snow.

 

They certainly need to do something for that stupid tss grill sensor or whatever it is for snow. That frigging sensor causes the dash led to blink every time i'm in a snow storm when it gets covered. These electronics suck.

 

I think it’s a lot ask for any sensor based system to work in a snow storm. I’m curious how autonomous cars fair in a snow storm. Tank shooting systems?

 

Vent a little filtered warm air into the Head Light housing that way it is clean air. A small 12 volt heating element in the emblem would solve that icing problem that turns on when it said it needs cleaning. My radiator stays clean in the worst wet snow storms still? That way the front turn signals still can be seen. If they can makes Brakes and Self Steering Cars work I am sure a heated Head Light or Emblem will be next on the list for Options? My Side Mirrors are heated??? They make heated Wiper Blades?

Just took a few searches to find ways to solve this. Guess I was not the only one wondering about the LEDs ect and Icing problems.

It is not advisable to use cruise control (adaptive or otherwise) in inclement weather.
It would seem that steering wheels and the ability for an individual to take control of an autonomous vehicle operated on the open road would be required.
Inside cities, with a lot more available navigation points it might be different.

 

I didn't read all the posts to see if someone else already said, but you can do regular cruise control by holding the on/off cruise control button and it'll switch to standard cruise control instead of adaptive cruise control.
But generally cruise control in snow isn't good...but it's still a good Tacoma hack if you didn't already know.

 

Not a fan of self-driving cars, but they could hardly fare worse than vehicles driven by ill-prepared & unjustifiably overconfident numbskulls in my neck of the woods.

 

Thanks that can come in handy for 100 mile trips not near people on clear roads. We can drive 30 miles in snow then back on good roads for 50 miles and the front end will still have snow over the emblem. YES It is bad to drive in snow and Ice and have it on. There are in between times I would like to use it cause it is so easy to go fast and get a Ticket!! Common sense still needs to be used (Darwin's Law) but there are always some who never use there brains that are behind the wheel!

 

Very true. I've driven many trips when the sensor has ice build up but it's still perfectly fine to use cruise control.

 

My brothers wife has a 2020 honda accord with the same bs and it works perfectly fine in snow squalls. I wish i could say the same for here automatic windshield wipers.
