My .02 is really think about what you’ll be using the bed rack for. Just the tent? Do you want the tent high so you can walk under it or low for mileage? Being able to walk under it and have enough head room in the annex is huge for me. Mileage, not so much. It’s only on when I’m using it. And i use my rack for utility when I’m not camping. How much weight do you want it to handle static/dynamic? The core of the entire system back there is the rack, I think it’s the most important part. Everything else will revolve and work/not work around that.

For suspension, make a list of everything that will be back there and how often it will be back there. See how much it all weighs and that will give you a good idea of the springs you’ll need.

Good stuff here! Really appreciate it. MPGs matter just bc I go from Oklahoma to Colorado and Utah for the big trips. Camping around here, New Mexico and Arkansas isn’t a bad drive and obviously way more flat. I don’t need to walk under it (which is why I wanted a hard shell wedge style instead of a swing out but they’re too expensive).

I’ll only have the RTT on the rack when we’re going on a trip and using it but I do landscaping so I imagine the rack will get other use, just nothing heavy duty often. As far as weight, it’s just my wife and I sleeping in the RTT (300-320 lbs) I didn’t think about weighing all of my gear though. That’ll all be in the bed and on the cab rack. I keep my camping “kitchen” in a Plano case that I just throw on the prinsu. Thanks again! Between the rack and RTT it’s about a $2500 commitment so any info is huge

 

Bed Rack: Hooke Road. I have one on my truck, it's a bit heavy but seems very sturdy, rated at 880lbs static and 440 dynamic, brand new I believe it costs $550 or so on Amazon. It does sit at 11" or so though, so any tent will stick over the cab just a little bit but I find as long as the tent isn't fully over the cab the mileage hit is negligible.

RTT: I personally like TuffStuff, biased because I own one but they seem to be one of the cheaper yet still quality tents.

Leaf Springs: I personally bought the Icon RXT leaf pack, and some 700lb King coilovers. Couldn't be happier with the ride. The RXT leaf pack is nice because it comes with extra leafs so you can adjust the leaf pack depending on the weight you'll be carrying regularly. 0, 200, and 600lbs. I would say it's definitely a good idea if you'll be offroading with the weight on the truck, but if it's just road driving with the occasional flat dirt road/fire road, you'll be fine.

If only you were closer and looking for a fold out tent, you could buy mine!

 

I got the tepui insulator in for my ayer 2. Install was easy, clips right into place. It has velcro on the 4 corners which I assume would normally hook to the stock mattress, but I don't have that. I tucked it under the anti condensation mat instead.

The ayer 2 is already a snug tent for 2 people and the insulator removes even more of that room. Not because of it's thickness but just because it drapes down a little. Something to consider.

Light blocking abilities are fantastic. I'm pretty sensitive to light while I sleep and this is going to be a huge help with that. It'll allow me to sleep in a little while camping and not be up at 6:30 with the sun.

Packing up, I noticed no difference in the ability to pack the tent up. It's pretty thin, but it seems like it will still do a good job. I didn't bother testing with the stock mattress because there's no doubt in my mind it'll pack up in there with it.

So to recap, I have the rainfly on, insulator, anti-condensation mat, exped megamat, 1.5" foam topper, down sleeping bag, down comfortor, and a full sized pillow and no issues packing it up. There is no strain on the hinges whatsoever.

One thing that wasn't apparent from the product pics is there are zippers at each window as well as the moonroof, which is nice. Will allow me to open those up for views if I want to for whatever reason.

Honestly just take your pick of any of them on Amazon, they'll all do the job well since your needs are fairly low.

 

I have one of these that run my tent lights and can charge my phone.

What others have said are all good options. If you want something a little more dual purpose and don't mind something a bit bigger / more expensive you could look into a portable jump starter like the Noco options. Can charge your devices as needed but also can jump your truck if the battery dies.

 

How is the solar charging on those? I heard not so good, but have no experience.

That’s what we have, and a solar panel to charge it.

Still no movement. Shipping status is stuck at “label created- USPS awaiting item”. Not too Happy with my Happy Strappy purchase.
