Yes, it likes to bite everyone and everything. I was afraid the dogs and my cat would be after it, but this chick is after them. They’re all scared of the chick.

I went with a gender neutral name… Pochi. Short for Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec sun and war god. I have no idea how I landed on that name, but I remember reading about the gods in a book like 10 years ago and decided it’d be an interesting name.

It’s not ugly, just annoying. This is how it sleeps, I think it’s awesome.

Get ready for the haircuts.
I had a silkie years back named Mrs.Poof and used to trim her face fluff back so she could see. They’re ‘sacrificial’ breeds meaning theyre genetically designed dumb so they cant see anything and are easy prey, kind of like those fainting goats.. same deal. Mine lived that legacy, hawk got her but the rest of the ladies were able to get to safety. Snowball is our sacrificial lamb now just because shes fat af and cant run. Just have to be faster than the slowest person..

I’m in the city, so only predators I’m worried about are all the stray neighborhood cats. My cat does a good job keeping them off our property but I’m still worried about keeping it outside. Around what age can it survive without a lamp? I’m going through a bulb every 2-3 days and it’s getting quite expensive.

Is it inhumane to train it to be on a leash? My goal is to have a pet chicken that I can take with me everywhere I go.

She’ll prob squirm and try to get out of it so itll take some getting used to but shouldnt be an issue for her. Silkies dont have shit for stamina though so dont drag her too far.
I took mine off the lamp around week 5. They need around 100 degrees the first week then -5 degrees each week until theyre used to average ambient temp is the usual rule of thumb. My heat lamp has lasted two broods, about 3 months total. Wtf are you using??

A regular office lamp and a 150 watt GE bulb. I calculate the temperature by the chicks behavior then stack some books and magazines under the lamp until the chick looks comfortable. Half of the milk crate has a towel over it to create some shade while the other half is exposed and has constant warmth. Chick doesn’t care much for the shady side but it’s there along with water and food.

Nutmeg took about a day to get used to her little skirt but has been wearing (and preening) it since around June. Hubby and I had to hold her down to put it on her though and she was mad at us for a week.

Now that I’m emotionally attached, it’s hard for me to eat chicken peacefully.
