Has anyone had problems with their Auto trans?

Just curious, debating on AT or MT trans while going taco shopping. I'm moving up from the 4l60e in my '98 Jimmy, so anything has got to be better, although I beat the snot out of mine.

So, any failures? I've heard about the weird shifting TSB already.

No problems here.. I tow quite often also.. 50k on the odometer.

 

Flinstoning it is better than the 4L60e. Two rebuilds in my old '95 Blazer and one rebuild in my mom's '97 Jimmy.

No issues for my Auto , I had the tranny reflash TSB done , it just basically remaps the shifting points for 1st and 2nd to smooth rolling stops .

All good .

 

For those that tow, any tips, besides adding a cooler? Or maybe towing in 4 instead of D? I know its better for the 4l60e to tow in 3rd, since it is stronger than 4th, prevents extra slipping.

Seems like toyota is the opposite of GM with transmissions, GM has some stout MT's, while the toyota MT's have some issues, and they make a great AT?

 

I am a new Tacoma owner, just got my new 2011,, 3 weeks ago, I picked the manual over the auto cause on the test drive of the auto it shifted like crazy, everytime I slighly touched the gas pedal it shifted and that drove me crazy!
I took the manual for a test drive and loved it and took it home.
I don't worry about clutch or throw-out bearing problems because nobody is better at me at driving a stick, I baby the clutch and I am well aware is all it takes is only one time of abusing the clutch to destroy it.
In the past I have owned cars and trucks with manuals with no problems, the only people with clutch problems are the people that don't know how to properly use a clutch or they abuse it by stalling, pulling, or getting stuck.

 

The AT is an adaptive tranny- it has to learn your driving style before it will really feel at home.

I have owned both:

I found slightly better gas mileage with the automatic and easier driving in rush hour traffic. I had the tranny reflashed soon after buying it- no problems since. I think the newer ones probably come with the new software installed.

I had no problems with the manual- except annoying squeaky clutch pedal. Took it in to Toyota for repair and it was better for a few months and then came back. There is a TSB for this. I did not own the truck long enough to have any TO Bearing problems.

 

I hate my Auto but I love my truck, learning to live with it.

 

I had a 10' 2.7 with 5 speed and thought the shifting felt a little spongy and cheap...gave it to my son and bought the six speed..could not be happier!
The six speed is a little tight at first and takes a little breaking in, but after just 1,500 miles it has really smoothed out.....autos should be for full size trucks with v8s!

Things have really changed. I bought my first new toyota truck in Nov. 1987 and an automatic was very rare to find. Now it is hard to find a 6 speed. I had to look for three weeks before I found the one I wanted.

 

What is this tsb for the tranmission reflash?

Do I need it? I'm at about 47K miles with not a single problem on the truck.
