Just have an issue with a stiff clutch. When I bought the truck from Toyota I noticed a problem with the clutch. It just didn't feeling like the grab zone was set proper. So within 100km I brought it back and said it needs adjustment. They said they can't be adjusted. So I drove off kinda bummed about it but had no reason not to believe the service advisor.

Well I finally decided to get it checked again after I put on 20,000 km in a year and It was still an issue. The different tech said ya it can be adjusted but it had been over a year so the window of opportunity closed. So I went to the manager made a stink and got it adjusted for free.

Now I've sold the truck to my old man who needed something to replace his old truck. Circumstances made me have to let go of it. But now he is convinced something is wrong in with the truck because his first gen tacomas clutch is nothing like the new one. He thinks the clutch is misaligned or not grabbing proper.

Do you think there is a problem or is it just two different clutches. The old is hydraulic and I'm not 100% the new one is. But not sure. I never noticed it was bad but I may have just gotten used to it. Also his tacoma has 400000km on the original clutch and the new one has 80000km.

    Any thought

Be aware of a stiff clutch. I did not notice my clutch was stiff either, it is a gradual increase in stiffness.
That stiff clutch lead me to have an inflamed achilles tendon on the left leg. 6 months of physiotherapy.

I've never heard of an automobile clutch that was not hydraulic. Ours certainly is. I think you need to describe the problem better. I don't know what you mean by "feeling like the grab zone was set proper" or "clutch is misaligned or not grabbing proper". I've never had to adjust a clutch, but I believe the main adjustment controls the play in the pedal before it starts disengaging the clutch. If that is not set correctly, it can be hard to disengaged the clutch fully because the floor gets in the way. If you are having a different sort of issue, I suspect it cannot be solved with an adjustment, but I will wait to see if someone with more experience chimes in.

See post #3 of this thread for the adjustment procedure.

Many older cars and trucks had mechanical clutch linkages (not hydraulic). These were a lot of work to keep operating smoothly after years of wear.
Some early front drive cars used cable operated clutches also.

The reason modern vehicles use hydraulic clutches is for economy of manufacture, there are less parts in a hydraulic system.

Please define “older”. I’m pretty sure my 1974 Datsun pickup had a hydraulic clutch. :)

The imports were early users of hydraulic clutches. (British and German included)

Most domestic passenger vehicles and light trucks prior to the early 1980's were mechanical.
I have seen domestic medium duty trucks from the 1960's with hydraulic clutches.
