If you have been following the joying unit thread its not without its problems either. This unit worked great for me right out of the box without sergeys software all that really does is unlock different features you wouldn’t normally have, sort of makes it more user friendly.

Did you read all of my posts ? There seem to be probs with the older trucks. Climate controls are backwards hot =cold cold =hot, there is zero OBD data & most of the settings do not work. Sergey has a web site just search “ aucar software upgrade “. He details exactly what his software does but it does not fix any of my issues.

You would be correct on the OBD just RPM and speed nothing more. I can't comment on the software as I am done spending money for now. I'm not positive but I think there is a OBDM dongle combined with the Torque app that gives you other data info but not certain what type of data from the older Tacos. Personally I think if AuCar is to be successful with this unit they should be the ones coming up with the software updates and offering them for free. At almost a G this unit should already have the bells and whistles bugs ironed out! Or at the very least let the buyer know that they are being used as a beta testers and that software updates will follow. I'm rather surprised that basic info that is being provided from the truck is not being shown TPMS, fuel mileage etc...

Correct me if I'm wrong reading all this.... The "tablet" is a generic android tablet; I wonder if you could find a similarly sized android tablet that has cellular data capabilities built in (and likely a superior tablet) and flash Aucar's launcher onto the data enabled device and avoid a bunch of the non-sensical tethering/connecting to home wifi to install shit

I'm pretty capable at digging, but I'm sure they're just buying tablets and installing some "custom built" launcher (like nova launcher).

Probably a lot more work than it's worth tbh, but it might be something I tinker with once I finally order my unit

Sorry I am still waiting. Eric did mention there is an Aucar software update. Hopefully he will be sending a link to it soon. He is also going to send the update for the hot cold issue.

You can use any generic android tablet with any of the already available car UIs on the Google store and pretty much accomplish the same thing without all the BS. My personal opinion is these units shine to the best they possibly can on vehicles who have a lot of preexisting integration into the head unit like HVAC. You are better off with a mounted tablet and traditional stereo on a 2nd gen Tacoma but these units are fun to play with and do look cool.

His software quite honestly optimizes a few things and fixes some lame bugs, and let’s you do what essentially is locked down from the factory (such as hiding UI/changing UI themes, etc), but it overall doesn’t do much else beyond that. My GX Tesla unit was essentially fully locked down, couldn’t change any of what was already on the unit but just locked where no user could mess with it. Installed his software and yay, now I could turn the android main volume down from 100% for example to stop the ridiculous crackling sound. He couldn’t fix the FM radio sound that plays all the time in the background when the unit is otherwise not playing anything. Apparently that was built into the MCU.

The reason you have settings that do essentially nothing is they are mostly vehicle type specific. Unless you have a vehicle with those features a lot of the settings mean nothing. Yes you have a Tesla unit for a “Tacoma” but it’s a generic platform with a custom fascia and harness, and that’s about all that sets it apart from one made for a Tundra, or even a Cadillac, etc.

I just saw this screen this evening when I went to go park my rig at startup. It went away but it made me wonder how your problem happened. Was it dead on startup or did it start as an intermittent problem and progress to failure?

Thats how mine started then a few days later the screen stuck like the pic you mentioned. If your able when it does this take a pic and send to Eric, its the beginning of screen failure. When mine stuck like that after turning off and back on a few times it came out and went back to normal but that screen kept coming back more frequently thats why mine was replaced. I just got the replacement yesterday. During the reinstalling of Sergey firmware, which he so graciously resent me, my screen came out all fuzzy looking like the pixels were off. He had me send him the android log file and he said they changed the screen type but didn’t state that on its info screen. He was able to then send me the correct file and I’m up and running again. The replacement unit actually seems to be way more responsive to touch than the first. I’m thinking they found an issue with whatever touchscreen they were using and replaced them.

This thread has been very helpful to me as I am working through the settings and bugs after install, my truck is a 2013 with the JBL amplifer. The big issue I have at the moment is the sound quality is worse than stock and it is only coming from the front passenger door speaker. I plan to review the connections this weekend and see if I may have overlooked a connection. I did notice that I have a leftover plug from the stock in dash harness that did not have a home for the new unit. From the previous posts it looks like I'm not alone with that issue.

Also thank you for the link to the enlarged wiring instructions. The paper instructions are a challenge to look over and my only workaround was to take photos with my phone and zoom in.

I also have a 13 with JBL but don’t have an issue with sound. If it helps the only connections I had left over initially were the GPS xm radio and USB plugs, I showed a pic earlier in the thread of those. I have since used the adapter I posted a link to connect my GPS shark fin. All other plugs were used in my install nothing was left over.

He did suggest I try using a paperclip and push the reset button under the mic, so the bottom hole on the left side faceplate. Do not push a paperclip into the mic as you will damage that, the bottom hole. It basically does a reboot and did correct the problem at the time however it does come back. Heres a pic of what he sent me.

Looking for a physical 3.5mm hookup, not a software update, maybe the software corrects the onboard. Having the mic in better proximity helps eliminate the infernal road noise our trucks have at freeway speed...not everyone wants to take on dynamatting their truck to mitigate the road noises...

Not sure if they would help your situation but there are settings in advanced settings for different types of volume gain. 38F741FA-8A4D-441C-8F70-744AC0C41ABA.jpg

I just spoke with Eric, he said the harness for the 3.5mm mic was not sent with the original harness. It is an additional harness. They are ordering them and can send one out if you need it.

You will need to contact him to get one once they are in.
