The OP lives in British Columbia. I don't think they are quite as litigious in Canada as we are here in the States.

Sorry brother about your loss. Like in the States, here in Canada (I'm in Alberta, BC neighbor) every province has their own laws. In Alberta the insurance companies agreed with the government to not pay out anything for soft tissue damage, just treatment...physio treatment, etc. Then for the more serious injuries there was a cap of $5K. But lawyers somehow still manage to sue and get some big settlements. Someone I know recently settled and immediately car shopping started. In this case their son was in an accident, he bought himself a new Range Rover, the dad a new Ram long horn edition and the mom a new Cadillac Escalade.
I hope that you get help recovering from whiplash and get a new truck. I feel bad for you not being able to sue...move to Alberta.

Sorry to see your truck that way and hope you are Okay. I been rear ended 5 times since I've been driving a few were hard hits. Those tend to make the muscles and nerves in your neck and upper spine sore and sensitive from the sudden Jolt of the impact, a whiplash injury. Make sure you get checked out by a Doc. A few days of a muscle relaxer med can sometimes help the discomfort and taking it a bit easy for a few days can to. Take care of yourself first.
I know it sucks having your new baby smashed by an idiot and I'd be very upset if it were me because I worked hard to have my Tacoma but a vehicle is fixable or replaceable in the end.

How are the seat bolsters in the truck? When people hit my subaru from the back it would break the foam in the bolsters (Subaru sucks)

For those that have had their Trucks totaled and (hopefully) paid out a fair value by insurance. Any one end up keeping their truck and money and try repairing it? Not sure if the cost is worth it but if you can pocket some and didn't have any issues after repairs then you're good!

The leaf spring shackle hanger is obviously bent forward. Hard to tell from the photos if it had bent the frame with it:

One good thing about a pickup truck is you have 6 feet of crush space behind you. The impact on your body would've been worse in a shorter vehicle (like an FJ or 2-door Jeep).

I can't speak for Tacoma's or anything in the current market. However years ago when one of my cars got totalled in a rear end collision my dad bought it back and had it fixed for my younger brother. There's more than just the repair cost in it depending on your state. I know then and now in PA that once its totalled out by insurance Penndot makes you have the repairs inspected and they need photos of the vehicle to prove its road worthy again and of course fees to to get a reconstruction title to be able to get plates on it again. R title also means resale value is diminished too. with labor costs to do body work on cars now I'd think it's often not worth it to do and then have to go through those regulatory hoops too.

Should buff out. If not, paintless dent removal will work. :)

I certainly hope it is better now here in B.C., but 20 odd years ago, I rebuild a couple of salvage vehicles. One, I took to the inspection facility, they never even moved it from the parking spot I put it in, but it had the correct decal and paperwork when I picked it up.

For anything that's totalled that's 5 years and younger you can get insurance to pay you what you paid for it new in a lot of places. It's called replacement insurance and it's available in Canada, not sure about USA. Don't know if OP has this but if he did and truck was totalled he would simply get what he paid for it new or insurance would buy him a new one.

Interesting that where you're at they had an official inspection location. Here they just had you take it to any mechanic that has a state inspection license to do it. Of course there is a form they need to complete too. Then you send it to Harrisburg.

It is just a regular place of business, but must be a certified inspection facility through the regulatory body. Ironically, I am now a certified inspector and could do it.
