I'm thinking of replacing the door speakers with some 6x9 3 ways on my '09 AC. Honestly, I'm looking for a little more volume, but better sound quality would be nice too. Will I get this with just a speaker change? Or will I have to upgrade the whole system. Not looking to blow the doors off

If you gonna replace any OEM speakers with aftermarket speakers you will have to get the adapters before any of those will fit

I replaced all my speakers and ran them with the OEM stereo for about a year. It was a little better, but nothing special. I ordered from Crutchfield and the order came with every thing you'll need. It was so easy to do that even a trained monkey could have done the job.

About 2 months ago I bought a Pioneer HU from Crutchfield. This combination with the upgraded speakers made a HUGE difference. So I guess what I'm saying is buy the speakers and try them. If it doesn't produce the "upgrade" you're looking for you'll have set yourself up well for the next step.

As a side note, if you're in the doors for the speakers you might as well add some sound deadening material too. I think that stuff made a bigger improvement in the sound quality than the speakers did without a quality signal from the HU.

I updated both door speakers and stereo head.
Updating bass allowed me to hear difference between bass drum and bass guitar.
I really enjoy my music more!

The sound is going to be no better than it's source. Get a new head unit. You will be shocked at the difference. Good speakers won't do much with a crap source. Whereas a good source will indeed make crappy speakers sound better.

For the most part this is true, but there are a few direct play options out there. Focal makes a nice OEM replacement kit for Toyota/Lexus vehicles and obviously there's OEM Audio +

Like other folks have said, get a replacement head unit and do some sound deadening. I'd be willing to bet the stock head unit put out less than 10 wpc lol

The focal direct replacements are nice but you aren’t going to notice a big change by just replacing the speakers. It will sound a little better but probably not what you are after. Change speakers and put an amp on them, that should get you where you want to be.

I just did mine a few weekends ago.

Definitely do some sound deadening. I replaced my HU and sound deadened the doors with stock speakers and have noticed a huge difference to hold me over until my amp arrives. I have some Morel 6x9 components going in for the next stage. But with the stocks up front and the Kenwood Excelon with sound deadening, it really brought the sound up several notches. You could start that route as the HU will give you more options down the road and you can do it in stages.

I can't speak about the newer models, but when I replaced the speakers in my 08, it made a world of difference sound quality, but just a littel in volume, even with still using the crappy head unit. I replaced that a few months later.

Ya, I,m looking at some from *********. Thanks all for the great suggestions. I'll start with the speakers and the sound deadening and see how that sounds! Cheers, Dave

There adaptors look nice. If someone else would make them and be reliable, they would sell a ton

Nice thing about C*****field is that they throw in the adapters (brackets and wiring harness) for free.

I just upgraded the speakers in my '13 three weeks ago. It isn't any louder, but better, tighter bass. I can make out lyrics in songs again. Talk radio quality is improved. And the new speakers don't give my wife a headache. It also showed me how bad the radio tuner is in the stock unit. Music off the CD or streamed via bluetooth is much improved. Music or voice from the radio tuner is better but not as much, and there is much more variation between radio stations, but news broadcasts and sportscasts definitely have better audio quality now.

I replaced my 6x9 factory speakers only, no stock head unit replacement and the improvement is well worth the investment for under $100 and 30 min.

Im sure glad I didn’t listen to everyone saying you also need a new head unit.

Im not a youngster that needs it blasting all the time distortion free, I already have tinnitus thank you!

I went with the approach to my installer, do whatever you want, no amps this time, I don’t care what it costs, I want it to sound clear, and need a backup camera added. Pioneer head unit and speakers because that’s what he sells now instead of alpine, primarily. The results are amazingly clear sound, plenty loud enough for my old ears, streaming via pandora or xm. Best of all I no longer hit stuff backing up.

I do wish I had the sound deadening done. I get the buzz rattle vibration noises. Next time I mess up the tint, I’ll get it done.

This is nearly the same set up I had in my old 4Runner and I'm looking to run a similar set up in my Tacoma. Morel Tempo components in the front, Morel Maximos in the back. Everything fed off of a 900W Precision Power amp. Kenwood Excelon head unit. Shoot me a message when you're finished w/ building out your system. I'd like to see how you ran everything and hear what you think of the set up

Did you install the focal is690toy in the front doors? If so, how's the mids and bass? I know focals are bright.

Will do!! I’m keeping the stock rears but I did add Noico to the rear doors as well. I’ve been trying to find or source a nice amp rack to go under the front seat to hold the Audio Control LC4.800. For a sub option, I found a stock JBL Taco box but will deaden it and replace the sun with a Kicker Comp RT 8”.
