Best way to put wires through firewall in 21 Tacoma

Have lights and coax cable to run through the firewall.

What’s the best way to do it?
Through the side of the grommet?
Any other grommets in the firewall that would be better?

Coax end is large and I don’t want to put a big hole in the grommet.

Brace yourself, and prepare to cut off the PL-259 connector. Unless you want to drill, you will probably end up pushing the RG-58 through and adding the connector after you have passed through the firewall.

 

Cut the pl-259 off, pass the coax through, recrimp new pl-259..

 

Concur. Cut the coax. Good opportunity to optimize the new length and your transmit wavelengths to keep out of phase. There’s another hole under glove box or just drill, paint and grommet new ones as needed.

 

Above and left of the main harness you have the opening in the fiberglass and flat bare spot on the firewall. Nothing behind it inside the cab.

Drill a small hole there and find where to make a cut in the carpet inside. Then get a step drill to install a proper grommet, which you can use for all the other wires you end up with too.

I don’t like to mess around with the main harness $$$.

The grommet in the picture pushes to the side easily. And the metal doesn’t have a sharp edge. Can I just run the wire around the grommet and add a little silicone to seal it up?

 

Putting any wire through the firewall that is directly in contact with the firewall is not good. Bumps, road vibration and time will wear through the sheath, and ground the wire, making it useless.

 

Do as you will, but it’s cheap and easy to do it right.

Here is my work. Obviously not wired up yet, so I just plugged the grommet hole for the moment. You can trim the boot back for larger openings to accommodate more wires in the future.

 

I have the same plate and I will be using relays and fuse box for my electronics
