Is your security light flashing in the center of the dash under the radio with the key on?

Cranks up for a second and dies, can be a symptom of a bad fuel pump resistor.
The truck starts on high pressure, and then switches to low pressure “quickly” through the resistor.
    This might be worth checking.

That is actually a good suggestion.
There has been more than one person run out of fuel with the gauge showing there is fuel.
But I wouldn’t expect the truck to start more than a few times if this were the case.

OP, if you want to check the resistor. It’s in front of the battery.

got some gas and it started up a bit rough for a few seconds and purred again

Interesting I wonder what caused the immobilizer to stop working that a battery disconnect would fix, it should just read the chip in the key when it's inserted if the key is valid the truck should start.

Was the security light indeed flashing when it wouldn't start?
