Some of the best players do come out of Canada but in the last few decades there's been just as many if not more coming out of Europe and Russia, among others. The stereotype is that hockey is Canadian but these days it's not so true.

 

Thanks for the offer! I did some googling and it seems like that engine is pretty well regarded, but it sounds like the 4 speed auto is pretty mediocre. If he’s got an opinion on it, I’d love to hear it.

I tried to get my neighbor to sell me her truck for two years before I gave up bought my garage queen. Now, she says she is thinking of selling. Garage kept ‘98 (I think it’s a 98) pre-runner with 84k on the clock. Got a few scratches and blemishes in the paint. I told her ask for $8500 and I bet it doesn’t last a day.

The H6/EZ30 is a nice engine, and a somewhat rare (not really rare, just less-common) option. It has nothing to do with Porsche (like the listing claims), but I suspect you knew that already. He said "The 3.0's are pretty stout. Most the power of an XT/GT (2.5L turbo), and much less of the headaches. They have timing chains though, so proper OCI's are key to making the motor last. They do occasionally need chain tensioners replaced, especially if they ever run low on oil, but the chain is a lifetime part. If it hasn't had coolant changes regularly, the head gaskets are probably corroded and ready to go."

The 4EAT transmission is reliable, but that's the only nice thing he had to say about it.

The center diffs in the trans can be ruined by running different/not evenly worn tires. You can test that with a figure 8 test though.

He was concerned about the damage behind the driver-rear wheel well. It's not clear from the pics if it's rust or just paint damage, but "...that is the notorious rust spot for all of the old legacy wagons. If that thing is midwest rusty underneath.... it's fine but you need to remember that every suspension job will involve cutting/replacing bolts. Ball joints up front will likely require new knuckles."

He also thought the price is suspiciously low. He's used to seeing similar wagons list for twice that in the Chicago and Colorado markets. That might just be Kansas though.

 

Did you have any issues with anything leaking after letting it sit for so long?

 

WA does a great job clearing the ice and snow off the road... then I cross into Idaho... every road is a solid sheet of ice, freeway is a hockey rink.

 

They key thing with Subies is to remember that they are VERY dependent on proper and timely maintenance if you want them to last. They are not forgiving at all when it comes to that, not like Toyotas are. OCIs should be around the 3000 mile mark every time for turbo cars as they are harder on the oil. Coolant and water pumps should get changed on a regular basis as well, even with the timing chain motors. Having both aluminum blocks and heads, it's a vital maintenance item to prevent the corrosion build up in the head gasket area. Otherwise, the rest of the cars are solid and don't require anything special maintenance wise. I've learned this the hard way with my 2006 STI.

 

Gotta watch out for paper mache transmissions and rear wheel bearings from hell still.

 

Haven't heard of issues with wheel bearings yet. The paper mache trans is mainly the WRX 5 speed tranny, they are basically made of glass. They are fine for the most part if you leave the car stock but if you try and put any real power thru them, it's hit or miss as to how long they hold. There are companies that make parts to beef them up but I just don't see it being worth the effort. Better just to do a 6 speed STI swap at that point. The 6 MT from the STI is rock solid and can hold 1000 wheel HP without issues.
