Had some idiot hit my door with their door. Didn’t even have the courtesy to leave a note. 235.00 later but much impressed with the work. See before and after photos.
Need to prevent this in the future. Aside from parking further away, what do most do?

What do most do? Nothing. It doesn't happen that much.

I'd invest in some steps so someone's door hits the steps versus the door.

The steps would be helpful for the kids too. How many inches sticking out would you think? Any bolt on step recommendations with out breaking the budget?

Sorry for your troubles...people suck sometimes.

    Here's the HDX steps I bought ($539 including shipping)/installed:

I avoid parking close to Entrances where everyone is on top of each other. Parking further away is good exercise too!

EDIT: But even parking further away doesn't make your truck safe. Higher seated vehicles can cause damage even with the HDX steps.

I'd recommend just getting 0 degree sliders. $600-800 seems like a lot, but would pay for themselves after 2-3 more door dings.

Sliders or steps that stick out help, but even then they can still get you. I had my tundra less than a week and some asshat did the same to me but dented the middle of my front fender over the wheel well. I was parked literally the furthest possible spot at bLowes out in the corner (my usual habit unless Im picking up lumber or something shitty).
Ive since installed a front and rear camera with parking monitoring and movement sensor for a little peace of mind.

I have the Cali-Raised 0-degree sliders. Somebody opened their door into driver-side one day while I was in my truck, and I heard the thunk of their door hitting the steel. I just smiled.

Edit: as other people mention, they’re not fool proof. They don’t really protect against vehicles that sit up higher, and they only protect part of the truck. I also park way the hell away from everyone.

Spotted someone getting into their car, and swung the door hard getting out. THUNK! Nice ding in the edge of the door, not a scratch on the rock slider. I was loading groceries into the back cap, poked my head around the side to see them lean over to look at damage only to realize it was their Kia's door edge rolled inward. Schadenfreude is only sweet when self-inflected.

I also recommend some kind of sliders/steps that protrude from the sides. Not much you can do otherwise except park in between the lines as best you can and be cautious where you park.

I do that. I park way the f*k away from anything. Invariably there will be 100 parking spaces available and
the next idiot that pulls in parks.... wait for it .... right next to me. 100 $($**#@@)# spaces available
and they park RIGHT NEXT TO ME.

True about the walking bit as well. It's good to walk...

Some people drive around and around looking for the closest spot to park.
I drive around and around looking for the widest part, sometimes I get lucky
and find a spot with yellow-stripe separation between spots, and snag that
parking incorrectly and eating some of the yellow to give more clearance on
    one side or the other.

    The repair looks good tho.

Another good use for sliders, but even though I have them, I park where it is empty to avoid shitty people.

Frankfurt PX, I had a lady swing the door into my pristine BMW. I got out to look at the damage and she got out and spotted I had German license plates, and started in with "My husband is a Lt, you don't want to mess with me." I just waited for her rant to stop and wrote down her license plate, smiled, and said "Please report the incident to the MP office, General Meigs's office will call them to follow up on Monday". Never seen anyone look so pale in my life. My wife was Army, her best friend was the General's Secretary. Never filed a report, but let them sweat it out. Hopefully, they were more careful after that.

Five O'Clock on base, Didn't exit fast enough. Sleeting like crazy, I got out and stood at attention. Paying respect as the flag was lowered. Didn't realize two cars back was the General and his driver, both standing at attention. I was a guest (taught electronic classes on the weekends, setting up the lab after work), but always paid respect to my host.

    Thanks!

My wife uses the step more than I do. She doesn't like where the "oh $hit" grab handle is on passenger side. I told her, "at least you have one." lol
