Nor’easter pushed through right when we were expecting the pompano to show up, but there are a few still in the area. Reports are making it seem like they blew by us in a hurry following the proper water temps. (St Aug/Flagler with decent numbers) here’s one I got on Veterans Day locally.

Big buck steelhead on the Rocky River, OH. Caught him with a Little Cleo spoon. I accidentally left my steelhead rod at home and only had a Bill Dance panfish rod and reel in the Tacoma! It was nerve wracking and I think the reel was smoking afterwards! :D

After an unsuccessful year full of attempts at targeting sheepshead in NE FL. I finally landed my first last weekend. It’s a tricky bite to learn, gonna need a lot more practice.

Pulled off a long but good day on the water. 3 limits of mostly Vermillion rock fish for 3 anglers, I scratched up my limit of Ling Cod (2 ea), and 1 a piece for my 2 buddies, plus an end of the day, last cast, incidental 20# CA Halibut for me. The 'but was the only photo we got today. We had to work hard for our fish today so too many photo ops were passed up.

Fishing tight to the pylon, dropping the sweeper jig or my custom rig I tied up down whichever side has the eddy (based on the current) till it hits bottom and slowly bringing it back up the water column making sure to keep tension on the line so I can feel any change in pressure indicating it may have been picked up. I think the section we were fishing, the current was moving too fast making the bite hard to detect, thinking back on it I'm pretty sure I hooked up with that one at peak high tide when the water really slowed down.

The GF had caught a sailfish in Florida earlier in the year while visiting family, and wanted to catch a marlin on the West Coast. Having never been saltwater fishing and only really having fished for trout in the Sierra Nevada, I was very interested, so we used some vacation time, went down to San Jose del Cabo this week, and went fishing for marlin on Tuesday morning with Daliken Sportfishing.

I caught a 30-ish skipjack pretty much right away (bit within five seconds of the bait hitting the water - didn't think to get a photo before tossing it back, ) and then trolled around a few miles offshore for a few hours without a before hooking a marlin on a rubber squid. The GF started off the fight, but got worn out, so I handled the rod for her while she reeled, and then I took over for the latter half of the fight until we got it onboard. Took about 45 minutes, start to finish.

Once we got it back to the marina (past the hungry harbor seal) and Daliken started filleting it, we had fresh marlin tacos and steak lunch at George's Restaurant across the street, and then brought 15 pounds home for ourselves (the other 15-20 pounds being donated to Daliken). There wasn't a scale at the marina, but they were estimating it at 125-130 pounds (I'm guessing it had to have been over 100, based on how hard the thing was to handle for another photo on the boat that didn't come out), so I'm running with that. Regardless, it's the biggest fish either of us have

She's got me itching to go again now, haha. That was a hell of a lot of fun.
