    Thanks.

Your not going to find a complete FSM for free very easily if that's what your looking for, Mitchell and AllData have single vehicle subscriptions that aren't terribly expensive and Toyota also sells 2 day, monthly, and yearly subscriptions to factory service info.
If you need specific service procedures, torque specs, or wiring diagrams feel free to ask, there's many members on here that would be happy to supply you with what you need.

It seems like the 2nd gens never had a paper or digital back to back copy. They were all digital/web based.

I've not looked terribly hard, but I would love to find a PDF of one.

There's an 05-06 one floating around but I've never seen any newer ones than that.

I’ve come across threads in this forum at one time or another where folks were posting ways to access the 2nd gen PDFs, perhaps they’d been downloaded by current/former techs and made available to the community. Hopefully someone who knows where those are will post those links here.

He’s looking for the field service manual with all of the detailed steps for every maintenance task, as opposed to the owner’s manual.

Ah, I just buy the Haynes manual for my vehicles. Toyota Tacoma 2005-2018 is the book I ordered from Powells dot com, an independent bookstore in Portland, Oregon. They're are great source for out-of-print and used books, too.

(Edit for a later "Come to think of it...") You might pose that query to "The Car Care Nut" channel on YouTube. He's a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician in Rust Belt Chicago, and you can find complete series of videos for each of a number of Toyota models, including the Tacoma. Live stream Q&A is usually on Saturday.

I’d like to get my hands on a Haynes at some point, although YouTube fills that gap pretty well, assuming you can screen out the people that have no idea what they’re doing.

There are no free lunches to be had. Just because the world is digital now doesn't mean it's free for the taking. That being said, please register with TIS and download your VIN specific manual.

Yup, that's why I subscribed to and watch "The Car Care Nut" YouTube channel, as AMD is a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician. He and his wife produce videos explaining how maintenance, inspections and repairs are performed in the Toyota dealership, specific to various models. An excellent video recently covers "Should you consider a career as a Toyota mechanic?" Toyota dealers are in need of technicians, like other automakers, airports and... Excellent series specific to Tacoma (5 parts), struts and suspension, engines, transmissions, and service, to name just a few. The maintenance videos are excellent, too, since he works at a "Rust Belt Chicago" so tells about corrosion problems you may encounter while servicing these vehicles.
As Dad said about communication radios (in AF service, and me in Alaska USFS and ADF&G), "it only works if there's somebody at the other end, and you have electrical power at your end." I always carried spare batteries and flares in my survey pack, even if I wasn't carrying a radio with the team. If I become thirty years younger, I would consider a Toyota service career...
Let me know if you encounter a copy of the book, "How To Keep Your Toyota Pickup Alive." I bought a new copy after I bought the new 1984 Longbed Deluxe (2wd, 22RE carbureted, 5-speed) at a Spokane dealership, commuting during the winter between Missoula, MT and Prince Rupert, BC to my seasonal hatchery work out of Sitka. I did wind up with a 19th edition copy of "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" this year. This series is/was written by people that explain exactly what tools you need to crawl around the vehicle with. "Buy good tools, and you won't throw them around when you become upset, but instead keep them wiped clean and organized."
Hey, it's the first day of Christmas break, and it began snowing in earnest Thursday so the students will finally enjoy snow sports after several years of open winters! We've seen a recovery from Stage 4 Extreme Drought to Stage 3, and hope for a good snow year with a cool, slow-melting spring.
