Mine got more noticeable with the colder weather. I guess I will start with torquing everything. On the 2011 Prerunner, is the spline joint to be greased in the middle or at the rear end? What grease is recommended?

These are good trucks but my Tacoma ownership experience has been vastly different than what I THOUGHT it would be like when I bought it brand new at the dealership 6 years ago. It's like these trucks are old men with all sorts of creaks and groans and small irritating issues but chugs along every day.

I've had this happen to my truck this past few months that have been cold, that light "clunk" feeling. I have been looking into purchasing a new driveshaft as an option to a remedy. This store seams to popping up allot https://driveshaftstore.com/Toyota-Tacoma-Driveshaft They look pretty solid and have great prices. I'll update you guys if this solves it.

On the Prerunner the only slip spline is where the drive shaft yoke goes into the transmission.

My guess is the slip yoke. There is a TSB on it that replaces the driveshaft but you’re probably out of warranty. I’ve tried everything including carrier bearing, tighten u bolts, engine mounts, grease zerks, etc. I now just live with it.

Check your rear brake shoes, I adjusted my E brake cable to tight and that affected my shoes making noise, had to back off the cable/shoes. Good luck keep us posted.

Dunno if it still holds true, but at one time all 4x4s had 5 driveline zerks -- 3 on the rear DS, 2 on the front. No zerks on 2WD Tacomas.

No, that doesn't hold true. You have to check to see what you have.

My 2012 Prerunner 2WD came new with grease fittings on the universal joints from the factory.

I had a similar noise a year ago on my 2013. Made a clunk, click noise when taking off from a stop sign. Turned out it was my front brake hardware( pins) were almost siezed. My mechanic took it all apart, cleaned everything and lubed up the parts with brake lube. Been quiet ever since.
