Interesting link, but in other threads on here, there is plenty of comment from other owners who WERE refused renewal of their license plate stickers, because of not having this issue of the fuel pump addressed. Since that notice was from 2020, they must have changed it because these notices of refusal were issued in early 2021, sometime after April 2021.

I would think the fuel pump, being part of the fuel system, would completely fall under emissions related recalls. All components of the fuel system, down to the gas cap are part of emissions umbrella.

You have a point, so it just may be considered as part of the emissions system. In fact, I once had an old Honda Accord and when I took it in to be smogged, it was the gas cap that actually failed and would have caused me to fail the smog test. But, the technician there had some extra caps and told me that if I promised him I would get a new gas cap, he would put on one of the other caps for the test so it would pass. Even he knew that it was a pain in the butt to have to fail the test, only to make a quick run to the store to get a new gas cap, and then have to return and do the smog test over again! So he passed my car, and I did go right to the auto parts store and bought a new cap. It was one of those with the gasket around the outer edge of the cap and that gasket had worn out. Good point, PinonTaco

jsinnard - did they charge you for the loaner/rental vehicle? I am taking my 2016 in tomorrow with wet seats and water pooled in the back storage cunbby, and they want to charge me for a loaner/rental vehicle!

No charge at all. I'll be in the loaner a total of six weeks.

They might secure a credit card on file for insurance purposes / deductible though depending on what insurance coverage you have.

    I'm fully covered.

@jsinnard Thanks for the reply.I'm glad they took good care of you. I think it's ridiculous that they expect me to pay for the inconvenience caused by a factory/manufacturer defect. My Tacoma is our only vehicle and the dealership is 25 miles away. I left a message with their service manager/director, but am not holding my breath for him to call back. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a free loaner vehicle out of them? I know, dumb question.

I’d would say it’s a safety recall put out. BY Toyota, so therefore they are required to provide transportation for you while they correct a problem on your car that you had no control over. Threaten to go to the media. I’ve seen this work on TV many times!

Update on my repairs, parts ETA is now 12/17/21. Truck was inspected for leaks on 11 Oct and they've kept it since then.

Another month with the 4runner loaner.

Anyone else run into the dealer wanting to charge to remove your camper shell to perform the 3rd brake light recall?

No, but it would certainly make sense because the camper shell was added on and obviously DOES get in the way of the 3rd brake light fix. I wouldn't complain about it as it is very reasonable.

Had my brake light replaced on Monday this week, and yes the dealer asked me to remove my shell prior to bringing the truck in for service. Good opportunity to clean all the accumulated junk back there. I can see them being able to do it without removal, but I assume it goes quicker with no shell in place and there is also no chance to scratch your shell that way. Sure it was a pain to remove as I did it by myself, but I can't fault the dealer for wanting it off.

wasn't complaining, and does make sense. I was just curious; the letter did not mention anything about it.

I was there to have other work done & figured might as well get it done now.

    update:
Just got the truck back; I declined to have them remove the shell yesterday and mentioned that I would remove myself then bring back later; I could not see myself paying almost $200 to RR the shell (only 4 clamps and 1 plug)

I received an update from the service writer last night; the tech was able to do the replacement without removing the shell.

I picked the truck up about an hour ago, and I can see that the tech opened the forward sliding window on the shell to gain access to the 3rd brake light.

maybe it helped that I paid for several items? (alignment, balance and rotate tires, oil change, & 1 tpms sensor)

Had my truck done yesterday. Today I noticed about a thousand new rattles in the headliner by the B pillar, so that's nice.

Mine goes in next week for the frame treatment and 3rd brake light, praying they don't tear anything up.

I still haven't installed my new third brake light. It's been sitting in bubble wrap on my back seat for over a month. I'm considering letting Toyota do this repair or at least the silicone and rubber seal after I swap the light. Maybe I'll leave the existing light and let Toyota deal with it. :notsure:

My truck has now been delayed until 27 Dec when they say I'll get it back. It went in for the fix 11 Oct.

do i really need to remove my camper shell? Think the dealer’s mechanics can loosen the c clamps and just slide it back a bit?
