If you were to leave your M/T truck in gear, not apply the E brake, then remote start: the truck would drive away with no driver; lawsuits to follow.

Good question. I just subscribed 2 months ago not specifically for remote start, but for the other features its worth it to me. I use the app to track my truck and check if I locked my doors mostly. I started getting paranoid when leaving my truck unattended for long periods of time.

Read somewhere they are disabling the fob too. I’ll see if I can find the article.

    Edit: here it is. https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/12/toyota-owners-have-to-pay-8-mo-to-keep-using-their-key-fob-for-remote-start/

I'm still confused on if I have remote start or not. I'm in the connected services trial period. I can see the odometer, fuel status, lock and unlock the doors with the app, but when I push the start button I get the "please make sure all preconditions are met, then try again" error message. I'm just gonna assume I don't have remote start, but why do they have to tease me like that?

I know some preconditions are all doors closed and locked and of course be in park. Dont know anything about the manuals if that is what you have.

Just have the computer check for those conditions (not in gear and parking brake engaged) before issuing the start command. Other car companies are able to manage just fine and even third parties are able to get it figured out on our very own M/T Tacomas.

What you're saying is true; Toyota probably just doesn't want to bother with the necessary electronics because they don't build/sell enough M/T to make it worthwhile. Also "other car companies", except for Jeep, don't build M/T mid sized trucks.

I honestly don’t know if it’s worth the extra coin, but I really do love the ability to lock my car from anywhere. I forget if I’ve locked it a lot and used to have to walk back out of the store I was in to go and relock it. Now, I just pull up the app and tell it to lock the truck and I carry on my merry little way.

I would guess being overly concerned about the truck going for a ride by it's self. In 50+ years of driving a standard to this day it's in neutral with the parking brake on. Even in the dead of a Maine winter I manage to walk a couple hundred feet to the garage start the truck and with in a mile it's warm. An idling truck gets zero mile per gallon.

I can see where some will want to pay for Remote Connect, and some will not. I myself never use it. But does anyone keep Safety Connect for $80 a year or $8 a month? That's the the only service I'm thinking to keep when my services expire in Feb 2022 (although Dynamic Navigation expires Feb 2024, which I don't plan to keep either - use cell phone).

I think it's worth it...considering it runs through cellular. Yes you can get the n2dezign's setup with cellular module and you are looking at $400....well I'm going to be upfront I won't have the tacoma for more than 3 years (I'm a ditch before the 3 year warranty expires kind of guy)...I also two electric trucks deposited so for me $80 for 1-2 years for $160 vs the n2dezign, it's a no brainer.... I also live in Reno where it's SUPER cold or SUPER hot, so it's nice to get things going before I get out of work where our parking lot is nowhere within reach of a key fob type remote start. Just my 2 cents from another perspective.

Remote Connect allows Toyota to track your vehicle. Just FYI in case you worry about that kind of stuff.

Not worth it to me. As others said, it heats/cools in very few miles/time.

You can easily turn all of that off and still use the remote start and other features.
