yeah with jd mounts and the tundra rack my ties rods rub at lock. I’m gonna shorten my diff mounts so I can push the rack further forward since I think the rack alignment is a tad bit back as it is.

Has anyone on here towed 4-5k pounds with a sua kit and a weight distribution hitch? I want to do the JD fab sua kit but I have a 7 x 14 trailer that I tow when we go camping. Will have a side by side in it eventually. I want to do the kit just because it sounds like it allows a better use of the springs but wasn't sure how well it would work towing? I'm assuming with a proper weight distributing hitch it should be fine right? I still like doing trails in the Tacoma too so I really would like to make it more capable with still being able to take the trailer with dirt bikes/ quads etc.

Probably would at least want to do the H70HDs or some sort of quick removable airbag system.

It’s all going to depend on tongue weight. But you will 100% lose carrying capacity going SUA. Even with the H70HD.

Well the weight distribution hitch balances the load off the hitch but yeah I figured I’d loose some capacity with the Sua. Just curious if anyones towed with it and their experiences

Haven't towed that much with sua but with my Chevy 63s it does OKish. Just take it easy. Get runs going down hills so less skinny pedals to get up hills. But it'll do it.

Anyone waiting on shocks. ADS is only 15 weeks out compared to probably double or more from king/fox. Just ordered my front bypasses and the wife’s mid travel setup. Get all your JD stuff on order and quit waiting almost a year for shocks.

Life is an adventure and an experiment simultaneously. If you find a way to make all that happen, hat's off to you. :hattip:

My suggestion (and I need to bite the bullet and take a spoon of my own vitriol) is get a proper truck for towing that weight safely and easily. You're asking a lot from a supple and flexible suspension to do double duty on occasion for hauling crap instead of ass down a trail.

Maybe some clarification on what trails you like doing. Video of said trails would be awesome. Everybody has their own idea of how to rate trails. A spring over may not be best and load capacity may need to be the priority.

yeah it’s not the best truck for towing but honestly it doesn’t do that bad with new gearing. I’ve towed up to 5000 across the country. I also really love the truck so figured I’d do what I can to make it work. I understand there are trade offs with everything so if I have to keep it soa I will. Just curious if anyone has made it work. Most of trails I do in the Tacoma are mild fun trails with the family. Nothing too crazy.

I don't really tow, but I do load the bed up frequently for work, anywhere from 800-1500lbs. I have the Sua with H70HD leafs, and used to have a 63 swap.

The 63s handled the weight fine, but left me with about 2" of up travel (normally around 4.5" at ride height). The Sua squats more, but I still have reasonable up travel. With a load around 1000lbs, I would have around 5.5" up travel, compared to around 9" at ride height. It does look a bit low in the back though.

I've not loaded it as heavy as the dude a couple pages back with all the rounds of wood though. That was nuts.

Do you have plans to go LT up front? Do you run trails at speed? If no, then I would honestly go to a nice mid travel setup with some springs meant for a little weight. IMO, if you don’t balance front and rear you’re going to notice one end out running the other. In my experience, there’s nothing worse than an imbalance in suspension.

I had Timbrens with my mid-travel setup. They worked great, a lil bouncy but tuned/ adjustable shocks would be a good pairing for hauling weight. Moved to hydro bumps and then LT SUA because hauling ass was better than hauling crap. :D

If you’re gonna tow that much weight go SOA and get airbags with daystar cradles

Thanks for the tips guys. I’ll stay soa. I’ll have a side by side with 28 inches of travel for the fast stuff. I just like cruising on trails in the truck with the family in winter and when we don’t feel like getting covered in dirt or sand. I was going to go LT then decided it’s best to stay stock. I’m at a mid travel setup now but got jd upper arms, slide rack and lower pivots with inner fenders. I’m going to replace my bilsteins with coilovers when I do the install. Just couldn’t decide on what to do with the rear. Would his mounting kit work with a soa if I just used his mounting kit but with a heavy duty over spring? The squeaking springs drives me absolutely nuts and I really like his setup with the Uniballs.

The JD setup is built around SUA. Just buy a nice set of deavers and you will be fine. My SOA setup actually works very well until it comes to high speed stuff. With the archive hammer hangers, shock relocate and U402’s I’m pulling 14”. It works quite well with the front. If it weren’t for the fact I’m getting into more and more higher speed stuff, I wouldn’t have done the SUA.

    Too many to remember
You guys are all missing the boat on this trailer debate...

A properly loaded trailer should have 10% tongue weight so if the load is 5k lbs then that only means 500lbs tongue weight.

    The H70 HD’s can easily handle 500lbs.

The bigger problem is how underpowered a Tacoma is especially with 35’s. I towed about 5k lbs one time on 295’s and it was awful.

Used to tow my 19’ toy hauler with mine when I was on 285’s. Around 5-5.5k lbs when loaded. With the s/c the power wasn’t too too terrible, but braking was definitely sketchy as the trailer brakes did most of the braking. And getting 6-9mpg’s wasn’t too fun either.
