But I have a choice of 5 different tunes and I don’t know which one to get. What tune did you get and how do you like it?

    The offerings :

    KDMAX Pro $500

    Overland Tailor Tune $450

    KDMAX 7.0 $400

    Coyoza/CVC $400

    OV 2.0 $350

I think CVC is just for manual transmission right?

    What tunes are being offered?

    • $500 KDMax Pro (87 or 91+) - Performance Tune (AT or MT)
    > This tune combines all of our tuning knowledge from the previous options and is aimed toward the enthusiast who wants peak performance out of their Tacomas! We have further developed our mapping for peak power in low and high speeds, greater low end torque, smoother shifting, smoother acceleration, predictable shifting, and more!

    • $400 Coyoza MT by CVC
    >This is tune specifically made for the MT transmissions with a sport tune and feel.

    • $400 KDMax (7.0), CVC Performance (87 or 91+) - Sport Tune (AT or MT)
    >This tune is one step up from the Base Tune for those who desire a Sport Tune and feel, with increased throttle response, better MPGs, even more power, this is a great all around tune.

    • $350 OV 2.0 Base tune (87 or 91+) - Sport Tune (AT or MT)
    >This is a mellow Base Tune that addresses the throttle response and gear hunting resulting in better MPGs and better driveability.
Does my Engine/Trans ECU software need to be updated (Toyota Service Bulletin TSB)?
    • Yes, your truck will need to have the latest Toyota ECU software and we will update it for free. No need to bribe the dealership.

The tuner will make good recommendations based on driving style, tire size, extra weight, goals etc. And probably let you try a couple of different ones if desired.

Be sure to try KD Pro. It's worth the extra scratch. I've tried numerous tunes and been with OVT early on, I had a 2016 before my 2020.

I'm currently running OVT, tried both 87 and 91 with the THX tune. Big improvement vs stock and I still average 17MPG in the city which isn't too bad. I'm wondering how different the KDMAX is compared to OVT, has anyone made the switch from OVT to KDMAX and noticed any pros/cons? Would you recommend it? I don't tow but carry up to 250lb sometimes in the bed, 04A61 AT DCLB truck on 31.6" tires. Truck is set up stiff for 95% city/hwy daily driving on Bilstein 6112/5160 with Hellwig sway bars.

I've only sampled the KDMAX-Pro that I have and it really does make the truck drive and shift better. Depending on where you are you should be able to get the KDMAX- Pro tune for $400. I know some tuners are more and some less. Good luck and let us know what you do and how you like it:burnrubber:

Yes, I would recommend KDMax Pro. The difference (for me) between OVTune 2.0 and KDMax Pro is the shifting points both speed and rpm. At some point in past OVTune posts, OVTuner Mat lamented that the ideal shift points occurred at too high of a rpm for most of his customers so he dumbed it down to reduce complaints of “rpm too high” or “holds gears too long”. KDMax fixes that. KDMax also appears to have more torque in the lower 4 and feels “peppy” as compared to the 2.0. You’ll see what I mean as soon as you take your first drive on KDMax. And, if you need the tune to be tweaked a bit to be more to your liking, they can do that as well.

Update: went with the KDMAX Pro. I could feel the improvement immediately. I’ll do a full report later. No regrets.

What does a tune do to MPG's on a stock wheel '17 AT averaging 20+ MPG's other than throttle response? I'm not a big fan of the gear hunting up hills nor being in 5-6th gear and needing to drop the hammer and getting almost nothing. I use my Limited on the highway, around town, and an occasional boat tow.
My hot rod days and need for speed ended when I sold my '68 Hemi Roadrunner and '58 Apache a few years back.

Most tunes don't actually change anything that will affect MPG's directly. Some may indirectly affect MPG's by changing shift points or even allowing the truck to stay in gear longer, but that's it. You'll likely see no change in MPG's if you get a tune.

As far as actual power I don't know that I got any extra with the KDMAX-Pro tune. I do know it drives 100% better with peppier throttle response and smoother quicker shifting. As far as fuel milage, being winter time my fuel milage is down a little but that's normal for this time of year. I don't think the tune changed much as far as that goes.

My mpg is improved at times with the tune (KDMPro), depending on how hard I’m hitting the gas, and whether or not I do any highway driving. The tune does not make mpg worse, that’s for sure.

And the biggy: no gear hunting, no bogging and good towing. Just smooth drivin’. :) (smg)

I did this for drivability. My truck would constantly hunt for gears on the highway and was always in too high of a gear while driving up hill to my house. Poor throttle response is no longer an issue either.

I went with Overland after considering a lot of the same options. There are a couple of different sub options within that too. I'm very happy with it, but the guy who tuned my car said if I ever had an issues or wanted to change anything just to go back to him and he would take care of it. So I'd make sure you get with a reputable trustworthy tuner.

    G'day BlackdogGS,

I live in Colorado and recently got a CVC tune on my 2018 TRD OR, with 265/75/R16 BFG tires. A night an day difference in drive-ability. Very responsive to the throttle. Shifting is smooth, quick and accurate. I noticed a 1.5 mile increase in my average mileage, when I keep my foot off the throttle.

I'm looking for a tune that would help keep the transmission in 6th gear on the freeway. Driving around 80-85mph my truck often wants to drop to 4th or even 3rd gear to maintain speed. Anyone here with a positive improvement of holding gear at high speeds?
