In the past I did the same with my Hondas and Acuras. At the peak of it here in SoCal you could not go in to a 7-11 without coming back out to a stolen car.

I read the same article this morning and was planning on putting one in my gti. Although I will probably just be recovering a shell if it gets stolen. I have the remote connect service for another 10 months now the Tacoma.

I'm in. I night fish and leave it on the boatramp. I can hear the crackheads in the neighborhood in the back of the bay start driving their fartcan Hondas about 11pm, circling through the camp loops and boatramp. Which relay is the fuel pump?

So if I understand this AirTag thing correctly, you could hide it in your car but if someone has an iPhone it will alert them they’re being tracked. Then they can make it play a sound. Then IF they find it they can tap it and disable it or take the battery out? Could work to give the cops or you time to find the car….am I missing something?

Honestly not sure since I never looked at it. The relay thing worked with the 944s because they used different relays for both the fuel pump and DME, so if you pulled either the car wouldn't start and the would be theif would need that specific part number.

If the current gen uses standard Bosch style relays or the same amperage relay throughout you are SOL as they can just swaparoo with something on the relay box diagram that they don't need; headlight relay during the day being a perfect example.

Favorite thing about theses vans is you can pop out the plastic license plate holder in the rear and the door linkages are right there lol.

Driven tons of these dumb vans over the years.

The way I understand is, you setup the tag on your iPhone, hide the tag in your car. As long as you have internet connected to your phone, you can track where the tag is. Only way others can be alerted is if you turn on lost mode from the find my app, then if someone with an iPhone comes within range, would be notified about the lost tag. Not sure if the tag makes any noise.
I would avoid turning on the list mode if your car is stolen and just track on the find my app where the vehicle is and notify the police.

My Challenger has a Anti Theft Mode that unless you know the Code it will only produce around 3-5 HP to move with! If I lived in a bad area I would put a hidden switch to break a circuit to something it would never start like to the Starter Bendix ect. On the Challenger it is so the when you let the guy park it they can't take it for a wild ride while you have dinner!!

Wait, you have a beagle, and he didn't go off when the truck started. Definitely a defective beagle. Lol.

Essentially correct. In my case I have an airtag on my truck but I modified it (removed the speaker) so it won’t make any sound. If the would-be thief has an iPhone, as well as alerting him to being tracked, it would actually assist me in knowing the whereabouts of the vehicle. The thief would be alerted to the presence of the tag but he wouldn't be able to make it sound so he’s stuck with it unless he can find it and toss it before the cops can find where the truck got to. That’s the plan, anyway. Buy time. And, I wouldn't turn on “lost mode” so the perp gets no message about who to call to return the truck. :)

I think it only alerts you if you set it up. Wouldn't the "find my" app be blowing up all day if it just alerted anyone with an iPhone?

Late to the party here - Many of the Toyota and Lexus vehicles that are stolen in Ontario end up in Montreal, in a sea can, bound for overseas - Did they find it at the port?

The tag has a small speaker so it can produce a sound. I removed the speaker from mine so it’s always mute.
If a “non registered” iPhone moves with the tag (without the registered iPhone close by) the non-reg iPhone will get notified that there is a tag tracking it as well as sending the location of the tag back to the registered iPhone. If a non-reg iPhone simply comes in range of the tag it sends the location data back to the reg iPhone without being notified. The location of the tag is updated in the app whenever an iPhone passes by the truck. The app doesn’t “blow up”, only updates when looked at.

Agreed, they could do that, try to start the Taco, and when it wouldn't start, call their driver to come back and retrieve their code reader out of their toolbox of thief tools, plug it into the OBDII port, read the codes, then get on the net with their smartphone, research which relay it is and where it is located, get under the hood, swap out the relay, IF they believed the dummy relay was the reason it wouldn't start, OR...seeing that there is a relay in that location already and ASSUME that it was operational and something else was the reason the truck wouldn't start. Then they could decide it they wanted to gamble and remain on the side of my (or your) house another 10-15 minutes, register on this forum and get a username and password, do a search for fuel pump relay threads and speed-read them.

Afterall...how many people take the trouble to theft-proof their ride by switching out a good fuel pump relay with a dummy one? I mean, I bet they see this strategy ALL THE TIME, and come with a good relay in their pocket, anticipating that you and I take the trouble to do this, like they see on almost every other vehicle they try to steal...

So why bother...We're just shit outa' luck.

Damn, we're only nine hours into the week and I've already spent my entire weekly supply of sarcasm.

No just on a street in the east end of the city. I’ve been told by the police that this is a regular thing. They park it in a public area to let it “sleep”.

Thanks for sharing your info. I recently read an article about a college student being tracked by some perv this way and she was notified of the unregistered air-tag following her. It's unfortunate that the shait-heads of the world abuse this technology also.

My tag is only on the truck to let me know if it moved without me with it, and to let the perp know he’s being tracked. I have no requirement for the tag to make any sound so I removed the speaker. It sucks, though, that these things are used for “stalking”.

Originally, I thought it was a bad idea for Apple to warn someone that they’re being tracked, (thinking about the car thief only here), but now I understand why it’s a good thing. Plus with the speaker disabled it can’t be located instantly by the would-be car thief, thug, asshole.

Honestly, as soon as they get the notification that the car they are driving has registered their iPhone they would likely immediately dump the vehicle. A subpoena is likely to show the iPhones the AirTag pinged on. If it pings in multiple locations to the same phone that’s a pretty good clue as to who stole the vehicle.
