Yeah, something like that with a sprinkling of homeless dudes all saying the exact same thing: "sick color, what do they call that shade of blue?"

Groupies. lol

I actually got to see that in real life. With a guy I barely know being the "groupie".

I used to climb a lot. I have met and climbed with a lot of "famous" climbers. It just happens that I met Chris Sharma a few times. We knew each other well enough that he knew my name and I obviously knew his. Nice and very humble guy for as famous as he is in the climbing community.

Anyway, back in 2007 I'm in Red Rocks climbing. Early one morning me and a guy I was gonna climb with that day go into the nearest coffee shop. Sitting at a table in the back is Sharma. Sitting next to him is another guy I know from climbing in the Gunks. Mike Ward. Mike moved to Vegas a few years before and owned both the local gear shop, Desert Rock Sports, and the local indoor gym, Powerhouse. Mike and Chris both give me a nod as I walk in. I give them the nod back. Groupie hasn't seen Sharma yet.

Groupie and I order some coffee and sit down to discuss what we where gonna climb that day. A few minutes go by and Mike gets up to come over and say hi. We BS for a while about life, women, climbing and other important topics. As we get done talking Mike gets up to go back to his table and that's when it happens.

Groupie sees Sharma. As he does his eyes light up like a deer in the headlights and I swear to god he starts stammering at Mike. "Is....Is....i.....is....Th.....tha......that......Ch.....Chri.........Chris Sharma?" Sure is Mike replies. Come on over and Matt and I will introduce you.

By this time I'm seriously regretting taking Groupie to this particular coffee shop at this particular time. It can't get that much worse I figure so I get up and head over to the table Sharma is sitting at. Chris and I say hello then Mike introduces Chris to Groupie. Groupie doesn't really say much. Chris and I chat for a few minutes about life, women, climbing, and other important topics. By this point Groupies starting to drool. Noticeably.

I take that as my cue to GTFO. Just as I'm standing up to say goodbye to Mike and Chris Groupie runs out to his van. I really do mean he was literally running. I sit back down. He runs back in with 3 DVDs. All of them films that Chris has starred in. FML.

He asks Chris to sign them. I swear to fucking god. Chris, being the incredibly nice guy that he is, signs all three with a smile. He looks over at me and I am mouthing the words "I'm so fucking sorry". That gets a chuckle out of both him and Mike. I finally manage to pull groupie away and we set about to go climbing.

The plan was to do a bunch of hardish sport routes. Turns out Groupie can't climb for shit. Add that to the fact that all I heard for an hour on the first route was "I can't believe that was Sharma". Sharma , Sharma, Sharma. After the warm-up I politely let him know I was gonna go catch up with a buddy of mine that I just saw walking up to the crag. That was the last time I ever climbed or hung out with Groupie. lol
