UpTop overland makes some nice 2x1 end plate covers… I had the same ones you did but the little plugs didn’t hold up very well. Just a FYI for anyone cutting their own bars.

Hey man, great to see you got the brake lights fully lit..

Did you mod the harness that came with the cap? If so, do you mind writing up a bit more detailed instructions on it?

If not -- and for others -- what's the simplest way to do this. Realized half lit brake lights might be a reason for cops to pull me over.. Not that I'm hiding anything, but just don't like having that thought when I'm driving around.

Damn that's unfortunate. What did you put on your rack that made you go to the wider bar/bracket setup?

Just a heads up, I just caught wind of a RSI price increase set for JAN 1. All backorders placed before that will be fulfilled at current price. Seems like all manufacturers are putting in price increases for the new year. If you were thinking about one of these now is the time.

I wonder if there will be a price decrease when they start making these in Texas.

I would not expect one. I have always been told by these type of manufacturers once price goes up it will always stay up. However it could give them room for an occasional sale, my speculation of course.

    thank you
Do you know how to take these apart? I haven’t tried but imagine cleaning them would help. I think I overdid the graphite when I first applied it.

Just PMed you about the bars. I’d also like to snag a set of these.

In moist environments (like auto locks) graphite (the dry powder kind) becomes a wet mess. On most locks, graphite is the preferred lubricant, but I will no longer use it on car locks.

That said, the spray on graphite films are probably significantly better (I have not personally used them).

Whatever you use, insure it is designed to not attract dirt, to handle water, and for whatever the coldest temp you reasonably expect is. Any lubricant worth the container it comes in will have those specifications available.

No mods to the harness (it’s tied in with my stage2 total tail- different mod). Not much more detail on install I can give beyond the post you quoted honestly. Others have gone in more depth I believe but it’s legit plug n play (unless your terminals got crossed which is easy fix). My post was to show the route I used which needed to depin to fit.

not much you can go wrong with on hooking it up

Need some thoughts on this plan for a crossbar setup. Bought some 1" x 2" extrusions from T-Nutz, and matching plates from 8020. Plan is to bolt these to the SmartCap, but I'm worried the 4 - 1/4" bolts holding each plate to the ends of the extrusion may not be beefy enough to hold a RTT and awning... Convince me I'm just overthinking this

Try to get at least 2-3 threads past the nut for full thread engagement and the max rating of the nut. I think those plates are 3/16, so I would probably go a little longer if you can.

Can you post photos or explain how you mounted the 10 series bars to the RSI tracks? Looks like you went a similar route, and used the aluminum joining plates

Do you guys take off the black plastic bed caps and silicone under them, or just install the Smartcap onto of it without and additional sealing along the caps/side rails?

Finally got through all 110 pages of this thread :headbang:. I'm pretty set on buying this cap and all of your advice and modifications are awesome.

    Some questions:

    1. For those of you in hotter climates, how hot do these get both on the surface and interior? Since they're made of metal and black I assume they conduct/radiate a decent about of heat, but also dissipate that heat fairly quickly?

    2. Does anyone have a cap with both a windoor and gull wing door? Might be going in on two of these with a buddy who has a LB (mine's a SB), thought it might be cool to trade doors, but a picture would be helpful in that decision making.

    3. Who sells decals for these to place instead of the SmartCap logo?

    Thanks in advance.

We pull the header bar and seal under it and the front of the bedcaps. We butyl tape the holes at the front of the bed. We do not pull the bedcaps completely off with free installation.
