Rear fog light(s)

Don't want to screw up Crash's most excellent SAE fog light thread even though there is a little talk about rear fogs. I am thinking about adding this for a rear fog. It doesn't have the F2 SAE markings (can't find anything that does) and is also way over the 300lm specified but other than those little problems it should work good and not draw any attention to itself until turned on.

My other idea is wiring the brake lights of a tailgate light bar to a switch for rear fogs. I had an Opt7 redline triple light bar on my 2016 and it looked great but they don't work for long and you have to tap the tail lights to get them to work without causing any issues with the "smart" tow features and BLIS. The Putco blade has a 3 year warranty and now they have a PNP harness for the fords, so no tapping wires. 60" of brake light should possibly get noticed in heavy fog or white outs.

 

I tried a number of those "below the tailgate LED strips" on my Ford pickups back when I was running them. None of them lasted more than a year. (I still have a brand new 48" Putco still in the tube in my basement.) Nice idea, poor execution.

 

I have the white / backup version sitting on the shelf in my basement. I had it on my 2014 Tacoma. I agree with your observations 100%.

 

Did you ever try the Putco blade? After 3 of the Opt7s I was not going to go down the cheap bar rabbit hole again.

Why did you not put it on anything else?

 

I never tried the Blade. No more pickup truck in the garage. Shrugs.

For backup lighting on the 4Runner, I have a slightly different setup (2 Baja Designs pods) for additional rear facing fire power. Besides, running the wires through the rear hatch would have been a bit of a pain. As for trying it on something else, the only other thing in the garage is:

For some reason (maybe because it's 4:30am) I can't seem to find the post that had your Gladiator rear fogs. Have you hooked them up and checked to see their output pattern? Reason I ask is all the Euro brands I see running a rear fog or fogs seem to have a red smooth clear non fluted lens. From what I've been able to find, SAE specs aren't a very wide pattern and about 300 lumens. Almost seems like a red rigid or BD rock light would work, but have no idea really.

 

Post #436 in the build thread. I don't have them yet, I just added them to my 'to-do' list. Based on information below looks like 80-300cd (not lumens) and similar to a brake light.

All though a requirement in most of Europe they are not legal in the US.
