Always a good idea but if you are not familiar with using one don't be surprised when everything sounds broken! All kinds of crazy sounds going on. Pretty cool to probe around.

Might be worth checking to see if you have a loose spark plug. That can cause a ticking sound.

An educated idiots guess ..... would be a noisey injector....

Worst case.....you should of checked the exhaust valves when u were in there......thats really only thing that can kill u....burnt valve...
pretty sure this is non-interference engine.....so even busted timing chain isnt end of days.....

I vote injector tick. I hear it occasionally too on my 3.4 and the speed of the tick doesn’t change with rpm increase, so I doubt it’s my valves.

I bet! I'm actually quite interested to see what everything sounds like under a stethoscope.

Good call, I'll check them this evening.

Thanks, I think my next move after checking everything is to call up Toyota here and have the injectors cleaned. That should hopefully give me some indication if it's them if I can't locate the noise to a specific part after using the stethoscope. Hopefully it isn't the exhaust valves...

Interesting, it seems to be coming from the engine rather than farther right in the engine bay. I had to google it to figure out where it is though, should the noise be coming from that location if that was the culprit? Don't know much about it at all.

Also, I didn't have the noise until recently. What would make it get worse like that (other than normal wear/age) and would it indicate something else is off?

I've used the stethoscope to find an injector that is NOT ticking in troubleshooting. LOL. Usually, healthy injectors do have a tick. If they ain't ticking, they ain't livin.

Sometimes the little isolator rubber breaks off. But the purge vsv always ticks when it’s commanded on. Some people just never notice it

My 2.7 ticks pretty good at idle...as soon as the rpsm raise it goes away. I think it's just valve train noise.

Fair enough, might not be them then. That being said I've wanted to have them cleaned for a while and had been putting it off so it's a good excuse!

Maybe it's just something small like that then. I've always been aware of light ticking/general engine noise but this is definitely something new. I drive way too much so at this point when something is different I notice. Not to say it isn't just a noise getting louder or something inconsequential, just that it is different than before.

Fair enough, the noise is staying even when rpms increase here though. Maybe I'm just searching for it which is why I'm hearing it then.

if you decide to have them cleaned at the Stealership, would you mind posting what they're going to charge you for this service.

I don't know if dealerships offer a inspection/service for injectors- I could be wrong, but they would likely farm it out to a specialty shop like MotorWest.

I just called them up and they call it an "EFI cleaning" if I heard them correctly. They did assure me it cleans the injectors, but likely won't be what MotorWest does. I have friends who have had it done in the past and apparently it makes a pretty big difference to how smooth the engine runs. That's all second hand though.

I am in Canada so the price will be cheaper for you most likely but it costs $150 CAD plus tax.

Oh... yeah.. Just get yourself a can of seafoam.

1/3 a can into the gas tank, ("EFI cleaning"),
1/3 a can into the engine oil,
and the last 1/3 into the pcv line - while the engine is running (not the brake booster- it will only clean one cylinder).

Change your oil after 50-100 miles, and fuel filter after that tank of gas.

If there rising with rpms then like others have said - Injectors or Valve train.

Ah hoped it was a little more rigorous than that. Well if I go with the dealership now and try that next time I'll be able to compare the two at least.
