The Rivian is the first truck. It's also not marketed as a tow truck. I don't think it's fair to use the Rivian as the poster child of every ev truck that will ever be made. With that said, I would expect a lot more from trucks like the 2023 F-250 Lightning or even an EV Tundra.

It needs a locking charger door, otherwise someone will figure out how to steal all your electricity

Has anyone run the numbers on the energy required to make an EV truck? I'm a happy 1st gen owner and probably have 5-10 years left on my current (gas powered ICE) Tacoma. I assume it's more energy efficient (at an aggregate level) to keep the gas truck until it dies rather than buy an EV now given how energy intensive the manufacturing must be, but curious if others have thought through the issue (ie, is it "better" from an environmental standpoint to keep an older gasoline truck running for the rest of its natural life and then move into an EV)?

Every pickup has it's range drop like a rock when towing. Better on a semi but trailers have the aero of crap and you're always at least doubling the mass. 50% is a great estimate of non-towing, but when your range starts at 300 and you're your refuels take 30+ minutes... it adds up a bit.

Depends on how you get your Power. I posted this answer in another thread.

Oh, wow, that's a lot more in favor of switching to EV now than I had thought. Guess I can still justify keeping the Tacoma for now on the grounds that it can simply do things the EV trucks cannot yet, very much including multi-day dirt road trips in Death Valley.

With regenerative braking and photosynthetic paint and charging stations throughout offroad areas of Utah I'd think about going full EV Tacoma. Short of that give me fuel give me fire give me that which I desire :headbang:

    Still the same old cab.
    Some things never change.

Someone brought up the environmental concerns of generating the power needed for all these ev's. This along with the mining and processing of materials needed to manufacture the batteries far outweighs the current impact on the environment of fossil fueled vehicles.

All points have been addressed earlier in the thread. But over the long run BEV are still less polluting over time. See video...

Yeah sure. All engines have issues during the winter. Its not inherent to just EVs.

Current tech isnt quite there yet to make EV compelling to buy but its relatively new. I'm sure there were a ton of people with the same pessimistic view as you when the model t came out and look where we are.

Well everyone wants the EV to match or better current ICE engines. No one has patience anymore. Fast food is too slow these days for them.

For sure, but the issue with EVs is more critical because the energy density of a battery is much lower then petroleum. EVs are much more efficient overall but can’t easily store enough energy……yet.

I'm waiting for solid state batteries my friend.

I would love one for commuting as these gas prices are killing my wallet but I just dont like the current state of charging infrastructure and vehicle range for me to go out and buy one.

Time to save money so I can buy one lol.

If the Gov's aggressive approach to EV infrastructure plays out, charging stations should be plenty by then.
