4th Gen. Tacomas (2024+) Spy Shots

I think the 22RET, was only available from 85-89. Same years as the first Gen 4Runner.

 

Seems like the main complaint from people who are relatively new to the platform, is that they are trying to make it something it is not. Believe why they are so reliable is because they are underpowered yet over built. It isn’t trying to rip itself apart. The early trucks weren’t never meant to blast 90 miles an hour down the interstate. They were built for back roads and going slow. Of course Americans love blasting down the interstate is why they departed from the humble work horse, to freeway comfort blaster. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. 3rd Gen is pretty good at being modern with a nod to the past.

IIRC Gas turbos were for 86-87 as a stop gap measure before the V6s came out in ‘88.

 

I think they did a really good job of making it just modern enough while keeping a solidly reliable platform too.

 

Yes they did. Really enjoying it, definitely different but still feels like a Toyota.

Trucks are used for towing too, even though it's "small", trucks are meant for being a work horse to whatever level they're built for and one of those applications is towing. Expecting them to tow at 50 is not unprecedented. But, as a prior Jeep owner, I see where you're coming from. People buy wrangles, then complain about mileage and handling on their 20 mile commute on the highway every day well yeah no shit sherlock.

Unfortunately I think that's where the Tacoma will be headed. People aren't buying them as off road toys en masse, as much as we like to believe that coming on here and seeing all the off road tacomas. For every 1 member here, going out in the woods or desert with a rooftop tent, there are another 75-100 people who just bought an A to B machine and don't even know what Tacoma World is, or that there's an "enthusiast" forum about their machine BUT if asked in a focus group, would complain and say "Well the mileage is a bit rough, annnnnd oh yeah the handling I mean, it could be better"

 

Have been reading a lot of posts where people are buying the Tacoma as their first truck, coming from Subies, BMWs, Civics, etc, then are shocked it doesn’t drive the same and the gas mileage is crummy.

Grew up in 60s-70s trucks….now those things rode like trucks. Where to me the Taco drives like a car and can do truck things.

I tow with mine, albeit light loads nothing more than 3000 lbs, it does fine can barely tell it is back there. Though that is my rule of thumb always tow haul at half capacity and you’ll be happy. Did that when I had bigger trucks too. Back when I worked construction, there were times we hauled overloaded, that isn’t fun no matter the vehicle.

Yeah majority of people buy them as a daily driver, including me, don’t wheel as hard as I used to, do all the gnarly stuff on a dirt bike now, it is comforting knowing I could if needed to, if I ever have to retrieve a broken down bike. Man, we had my 1st Gen into some spots where it shouldn’t of fetching a broken bike.

 

Question for all to speculate. I believe the GVWR for the current Taco is 5500 pounds.
Since mid sized trucks continue to get bigger, do you think that they will bump it up to over 6000 pounds to qualify for the business tax write-off?

 

I Think I’m just old school but I do not want a turbo in my truck. In a car I don’t mind though.

 

It's great for drive-ability. But "older trucks" won't be as prevalent. Still see 90s F150s everywhere. Probably won't see a lot of EcoBoosts 25/30 years after the fact. But such is the way of the world these days.

 

Hopefully it doesnt share the Tundra's Grille.

 

That is not a fourth generation Tacoma that's the Tundra. Way too early for test Mules.
