Oh weird I though Alcan was out of Utah, must be confusing it with a different outfit. But yeah shipping and overall materials cost before covid times was a lot different than it is now. Got lucky I ordered mine when I did.

Mounted my beadlocks - truck goes under the knife next month.

 

I've wondered a few times how swapping to 4.88's would effect the auto trans temps.

 

Speaking of 4.88s, I ordered 4.56 gears and F and R e-lockers from Nitro in November and now they're telling me 4.56 gears won't be available till June but 4.88s should be available in March. I was on the fence before ordering and this may be the push I need to go 4.88. Anyone have 4.88s and wish they went 4.56? Truck is 3.4 Auto Xtracab on 33s w/factory bumpers

4.88's would be my vote. Some would even say 5.29's, but that's likely better for a heavier buildout too.

The 4.88's in my M/T 2.7L are great with my 33's. About spot on with where I want it. A bit overgeared, but I would rather it be that way for slow speed control and helping with extra weight. With an auto, it would be damn near close to stock with 33's I would think.

And e lockers huh? The harrops? Why? Just curious, I thought they would be awesome at first but latter realized they could be problematic in some situations.

 

lmao... Not as problematic as ARB.

 

I have never seen or experienced an ARB giving out and I hang with a lot of people that have arbs. I have heard of issue, but nothing recent anyways.


The Harrops im sure are reliable, I was more talking about the behavior they do when you roll backwards and unlock, which can be an issue when on ledges or in places where you need to rock the truck a bit.

 

Thanks for the input betterbuckleup and Blackdawg. After going to Death Valley, I really want to re-gear. The truck struggled a ton going up those long hills.

And yeah, I've heard of e lockers possibly being problematic in a rocking situation but I prefer the simplicity of electricity over air (I do work in EVs ). I don't plan on doing a ton of hard core rock crawling and they should be more reliable and require less maintenance than air lockers.

I agree, was just in DV myself, new tires are bit bigger than my old one, definitely don't have to go i used to. Not that I had much.

 

LMAO... I have never seen anyone NOT have problems with their ARBs. Actually, correction. @MattJakobs has ARBs and I don't know if he had any problems with them after we installed them.

Harrop = Simple electrical connection
ARB = MORE electrical connections PLUS air connections. There's literally 10x more fail points with ARB than Harrop. Every single person I know that has ARB (Besides Matt) has had a problem with ARB. A few of them have had to send the lockers back.


East Coast Gear Supply will tell you they have never seen a Harrop "fail" I promise they can't tell the same story about ARB.



I have a year of wheeling on a Harrop front. It never unlocked on me. Not saying it can't happen. But I will say the ARB will blow the air fitting inside the locker more often than Harrop will unlock by rolling backwards. The unlock on rolling back is more theoretical, than an actual problem. Harrop is aware of this misconception, and they have even tested for it, to the point of an axle failure, without the locker being damaged or coming unlocked.

 

I think that unlocking thing with the Harrops would be a big deal if you wheel a manual.

Also on year 6 with my ARB with zero issues.

 

That's probably one of the 1 million reasons I think manuals are for sports cars.

You're not making that up for sure.

ECGS had both ARB and Harrop lockers available when I bought mine.

I told them "money no object" and was recommended the Harrop.

They've never heard of one fail, ever.



Too bad I never installed it.
