I looked at these online at two dealers and the core charge was $75 each.

They give them an odd name so you can’t search for them that way, you pretty much need to know the part number.

even with the core charge, if you payed that to get an OEM reman axle shaft is still a pretty good deal for under $200 a pop. I can get used ones on ebay or a pick n pull for around $80 but you never know the condition of them and sometimes the boots are dry rotted.

No argument about that. But it does change the equation regarding "buy now and swap when ready" vs. "buy 'em when you need 'em".

And if buying online, there is the cost to ship the old ones back. I found the axles for just over $100 each on Wesley Chapel Toyota's parts site and they have (or had) a free shipping promotion, but that doesn't get the cores back to them for free. I wish my company made shipping through them more convenient, getting their discount would be nice.

Yeah I think if you could get the local dealer to match a price it would be nice. The cost to send back would probably be 1/3 of the stinking core charge so better to just keep the old one as a spare and rebuilt yourself at that point. I have two or 3 spares I keep in my shop and bring usually 1 or 2 with me when on a long wheeling trip, so I don't need one "now", but if my inventory gets low due to failures it's nice to know I can get a quality rebuilt unit for about half the price of new if I eat the core charge. I never trust the cardone or other chinese knockoff brands, the range of motion and strength that they have isn't anywhere near what the OEM makes.

Well I got the truck back and it feels way better but my abs light is on. My mechanic got it all pit back together and triple checked it with me and his scan computer said it is the right side wheel speed sensor. He said he'd cover the cost and such with no labor to get it fixed bit do any of you have any ideas as to what it could be. Truck drives great but I really don't want an abs light on forever

Either he damaged the sensor itself or he stretched the wiring when pulling the cv axle. Rock Auto sells speed sensors cheap and they work fine. OEM are pricey. Very easy to swap out.

Well I hope thats all it is. He said to bring it by tommorow morning and he take a look at it and would get it fixed with me. I hope they stand by there word and such and I hope it's just the sensor. It's 120,000 miles old now so I guess it could be something like that

Probably sensor or potentially wire got stretched or pinched going to the sensor. You can unplug and check for voltage at the harness.

When Toyota remanufactures parts they replace all wear components 100% of the time. In a CV that means bearings at minimum.

Not on Land Cruisers. On Ih8mud the Toyota reman cv axles for 100 series have been proven to be crap. They don't touch the inner or outer splines. On a Tacoma that's fine because the outer is held together with an axle nut. For the LC it's terrible because the CV is held in by a c clip, no axle nut. The groove of the c clip has to be in good shape, otherwise the c clip could come off causing a major failure. These are photos of reman Toyota axles.

I said all wear items, not all worn items. The splines are not considered to be an always-replaced wear item. You're absolutely right though, they should be checking the c-clip and splines more carefully, so that's a bit of a pisser for sure, and unlike what I've typically seen from Toyota.

They need a better qualification system of the outer joint housing/splines for sure, but I would still expect those shafts to have all new bearings in them.
