Headliner is in. Bad picture but maybe it will hide some of my mistakes.

 

Just when I get the interior back together it's time to take it out again... The radio thinks there are headphones plugged into the rear seat audio controls, that I don't have.



It's kind of a cool system. When you plug headphones in the rear the bass(rear hatch door) is lowered and the rest of the vehicle audio is lowered. The main problem is I don't have the jacks/controls to do that.



Now I'm chasing wiring, starting with the connector that merges the signal wires behind the rear cargo area trim panel I just reinstalled..

Disconnected
Connector c0296 rear cargo area, no change
Connector c0486 driver kick panel, no change

I need to pull the radio and clean up the buttons and knobs anyways..

 

Pulled the radio and stripped it down, the board is a little crusty so maybe the headphone enable is gunked or corroded on. Cleaning it didn't help and I can't find a wiring diagram of the radio to troubleshoot it any further.

Picked up a headphone control unit on ebay and the audio output and controls work fine. Unfortunately when you unplug the headphones it doesn't disable the control/output.

 

From one annoying issue to another...

P0154 - O2 sensor circuit no activity detected (bank 2, sensor 1); Front sensor RH bank open circuit

The forums are all back and forth if Bosch O2 sensors(factory) are good or bad. So I ordered some Walker brand ones. I also ordered a Hantek6022 usb oscilloscope to help diagnose what the sensors are doing directly too.

The new O2 sensor is acting exactly like the old one. Based on previous tests the wires are intact between the ECM and Oxygen sensors.

The driverside is fluctuating normally while the passenger side is stuck at about 400-500mv. The odd thing is the OBD reader shows more fluctuations above and below those values sometimes, but the scope stays steady. (OBD reader O2 Sns DS-A is the passenger side and O2 Sns US-A is driverside)

More oscilloscope readings on the ground side of the signal circuit resulted in nothing helpful..

Yellow = driver side = working
Blue = passenger side negative ground? Maybe the ECM trying to compensate for the steady signal?

Pulled the Y-pipe to weld up the cracks and as I was moving it around to wire wheel the areas clean I heard rattling.. Got the borescope out and found some chunks turned sideways. So I look dup new cats and magnaflow has em for $188 each with a partner recycling program up to $75 back so I ordered them. Got to looking around online and found a recycling company that quoted $953 but wanted me to pay to ship to Malaysia.. Rrcats.com quoted $775, facebook (licensed) buyer Crispin Metal Recycling said $800.

Crispin came to my place to pick them up and said "no this no good, is broken".. We negotiated and he gave me $680 then he hucked them into his truck bed... I guess that shows how much being broken matters, the not broken one is now probably broken.

 

Just wanna say that as a long time Disco fan and always looking at buying one of these trucks, I appreciate your build thread. Keep up the good work

Well damn that took long enough to figure out.. The cats didn't fix the problem, but they did need replaced. After going back to step 1, printing out diagrams and pinouts, writing down numbers, and just after I sort of gave up I went back to check the ground signal with the Oscilloscope by back-probing the ECM connector. I wasn't expecting any changes, and wasn't surprised to see both grounds nice and steady and low 30-50mV. When I glanced at the obd2 reader and saw both O2 sensors dancing around I was kind of confused.. I guess like I originally thought it was a connection issue at the ECM, but I thought I ruled the connections out..

 

Cool, seems this thing was rekeyed at some point.. I now have a ignition that matches the key which also works the doors. Time to get some extra keys made.

 

Welp that wasn't exactly it.. I unhooked the backprobe for the oscilloscope for my wife to ride and.... Bam stopped working.. Been fighting with it for a while and was not able to get it working again with the back probes or any wire wiggling.

Finally today I took out the ECU and started probing about.. Wanted to verify if the O2 ground paths in the ECU went straight to ground or if they had any kind of logic. Well it seems they are supposed to go straight to ground.

Behold, the B2S1 ground was not working. So I tried to reflow that connection without any difference. So I just soldered a jumper wire straight to ground(no picture but looks like below). The o-scope readings like good, the OBD scanner looks good, and it drives good. Hopefully this is the end of that story.

Well, this is a bit worse than I was expecting.. Back to Walmart for more seafoam spray, Berrymans carb cleaner, and a tray to soak everything in.
