Fitting matching wheels/tires to utility trailer?

I'm thinking of doing a spring-over on my 5x10 and setting it up as a budget camping trailer. What's the best way to convert it to Tacoma lug pattern? Adapter, hub swap, new axle?
If I grab a set of factory wheels, I can throw my old tires on them and have two spares handy. It will also sit level and be a handy spot to park my tent and maybe an awning.

Any thoughts?

 

Was a time guys would use the same axle as their jeep. Complete spare on the hoof. Something to think about.

 

Chances are you'll need spacers to clear the wheel/tire. I know I did on my utility trailer. I added a set of stock Jeep steel wheels with my old BFG's. I bought a set of 1.5" spacers and threw them on.

I'm not sure if they make a hub to convert the 5x4.5 trailer to a 6 lug Toyota pattern. You can also look at Compact Camping Concepts for a custom axle. I bought one for my Tacoma bed camp trailer. It was right at $200 shipped from OR to AL. It has the Toyota hub and the same WMS as my Tacoma.

Thanks, that's the info I needed. I found a place in Dallas that will build to my specs for a similar price. I'll do that.

 

Easy. I did exactly that for my travel trailer. It's great because I now have 2 spares between the truck and trailer. I also did a spring over axle swap for more clearance.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008M9WFDQ is the adapter spacer I used, with red loctite and tightening to the correct lug specs. Like gixxerphil said, you need a spacer to clear the backspacing. I did not notice an MPG change when I did this, but I already was getting 10-12mpg towing anyways.

Spring over axle... I added the bumpstops on top of the axle too, they're reused Tacoma bumps.



~30.5s on SR5 rims next to the tiny factory wheel.



Now the trailer rides level, rides high so it has more clearance on gravel roads or parking lots, and matches the truck.

Did you have to use a particular lug nut on these wheels for centering purposes? Or do Toyota lugs work?

 

I sold the trailer a good while ago, we have a motorcoach now, so I'm not 100% sure. It looks like I ordered these with it:

I've been thinking of doing this, glad I bumped into this thread.

 

I used the Tacoma type of lugs when I put matching wheels on my trailer. But I had to get the right (machined) spacers to address the offset and for the Tacoma type of lugs to work.

Built a trailer a few years ago and ordered an axle with 6 lug hubs from etrailer.com.
From what i remember, it was a custom length and wasn’t expensive. Can’t recommend them enough.

 

Gotta say, Pal. That's an awesome set up. There should be a Federal Law where the traffic on the highway has to pull over or part when you come down it.
