I guess it depends on the dealer. They quoted me $600 but I said no. I fixed it myself for $150 but didn’t tell them about it and it’s not noticeable at all. That was back in 2018.

Just this year, I went back to the Dealership and they went ahead and did the recall work anyways by applying silicone around the light and placing a bracket on it. They probably didn’t even check if it was leaking. It’s not much but it’s an extra layer of protection.

I had mine in for the fuel pump recall and they apparently ordered the parts to do the brake light. They called me a few days later and said the parts were in and they needed to schedule me to come in and get them installed. I'm like, wtf are you talking about? Oh, the service writer didn't tell you about the third brake light recall? Well, no. I took it in a couple of days later and got it done so I'm caught up on recalls for now.

I'll probably run a bead of silicone around it again at some point then.

I actually received a recall notice in the mail directly from Toyota about this, so I logged onto my dealer website in the service area, and it was right there saying my 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport had a recall notice, specifically, this one for the 3rd brake light. I made the appt and it was all done within an hour.

Regarding the fuel pump recall, I don't know where you live, but here in CA, the DMV actually will not renew your license plate if you do hot have this recall. This is well documented on another thread about this here on TW. Just get it done, along with the 3rd brake light recall too. Although both may be alright, I would not want to wait until either one craps out on you. Yes it is annoying to have to take the truck back to the dealer, but in my case at least, I thought better safe than sorry...

5 years is insane. That's plenty of time for it to leak to develope and destroy your interior with mold and other nasties. :bananadead:

Quote for 4h to install trim ring after already having the truck the better part of a day for oil change and recall (without telling me they were out of trim rings until I picked it up).

    Ah, good times...

I'm just glad Toyota stepped up to do this for all of us out of warranty and didn't just act like there wasn't a problem. Mine was leaking pretty bad.

Yeah, normally I would assume my 2017 work truck would be out of warranties since it's well past the 36K/3years at 4years/80K by now, so I jumped on it when I saw there wasn't a stipulation like that I could find mention of.

Has anyone had this done who had a Lomax tri-fold hard tonneau cover on the bed and had to remove it first, or were they able to work around it?

I have a Rough Country hard tonneau on mine and they didn't say anything. Figured it gave them something to sit on while doing the work. Beats standing up and stooping down.

I took my truck in and I have a hardtop trifold bed cover. I just unlocked the tailgate [power lock with a dash switch] and folded the cover up, leaving it on. That was plenty of room for them to be able to replace the 3rd brake light. No problems.

I have a Leitner ACS rack.
I took my tent off for the winter and had removed the front cross bar and they had zero issue with it.

I just had my "recall" done on my 2017 DCLB OR on 12/22. Everything was fine before I went in and my truck wasn't having any issues. The dealership had the truck for about 4 hours before calling me to tell me it was done. They said they didn't have to replace the whole light and that there was only a little bit of moisture they found. When I went back to pick it up the vehicle it had a weird smell, kind of like vomit that definitely was not there before I dropped the truck off. I asked the dealership what the smell was, but nobody seemed to care or have any answers. Have any of you guys noticed a strange smell when you went to pick up your truck after the recall was completed?

    Got mine doen jus
Got mine done today. No smell but I suspect it was the sealant they used that caused the smell in your cab.

They did all of the work from the outside.

No leaks here so they put a new seal in as the recall stated. 1.25 hours of shop time. Done deal.

Thanks cloaked. When I asked the service manager he checked with the team that did the work and they said the sealant and glass cleaner they use doesn’t normally have a smell. They also said the same thing to me about doing the work from the outside. Hopefully you’re right and it’s just the sealant.
